Correct, only actual letters of the alphabet count as the letters for the iPod type/color.
No, I think the space counts. Otherwise, "Doctor Q" comprises of 7 characters, and would throw the whole thing off. They must base it on character, which explains why we're both red Shuffles.
Letters, Spaces, Numbers, and even Punctuation counts. See example of 13 = Black Nano.
