Sigh.
I refuse to get an unlocked iPhone; therefore, I continue to wait in silent aggravation.

I just gave in last week after holding off for so long. It was only $249 for an 8gb, very hard to turn down... Just picked it up yesterday and love it!

That for some moral reasons? Just do it already

Probably because he wants to be guaranteed a seamless customer support experience, without having to worry about questions like, "Will my iPhone simply cease operation without explanation if I attempt to use the next firmware update (eg. the forthcoming June update that allows me to buy SDK Apps)? Uh-oh, better wait until somebody else bricks theirs first just in case."

I seriously doubt there are any moral quandaries along the lines of "Oh, poor Apple! If I use this unlocked phone, they won't get any of my revenue-shared dollars! Waah!"

You just won yourself a cookie.

Just a bit longer

Our company does beta testing with Rogers. I can tell you that Rogers ARE launching iPhone in Q2. The things affecting the launch are ensuring that Visual voicemail is properly working and reworking their billing platform to handle new plans that will be required. I know for a fact that Rogers is working with Apple engineers. The other thing is that is hasn't been decided whether to launch with Rogers or Fido. The Fido management is fighting to get it but I would put money on it going with Rogers since the arrival of V2.0 firmware makes the phone a great enterprise device with its push email/calendaring.

As for whether Telus or Bell are going GSM... well Bell already is working on a local GSM network for the Olympics. There are tons of roaming dollars to be had from overseas visitors. Long term though, Telus do have a GSM overlay planned on the drawing board but both them and Bell are waiting to see what turns out of the next spectrum auction at the end of May. Any new entrants are almost certainly going to be GSM.

Finally, it's worth mentioning that GSM is a network - not a transmission technology. GSM is actually technology agnostic - it will happily work with TDMA, CDMA, HSPDA, UMTS etc etc as long as the subscriber interface is present (the part that works with the SIM).

Coming to a Canada near you soon.

Taken with a grain of salt. You know, every once in a while someone posts on this forum claiming to "know for a fact" because they work with or knows someone who works with Rogers and the iPhone is coming out next Tuesday in Canada. I can type a long post to make it seem like I have some inside info too.

The chances of Q2 are slim, considering Apple doesn't even have the trademark for iPhone secured in Canada yet, and won't until June at the earliest, which is the end of Q2. I very highly doubt Apple would cut things so close, with the risk of even further delay.

I would guess there is some planning in the works, but until a deal is cut with Rogers and all legal issues are taken care of, there will be no Apple sanctioned iPhone in Canada.

Do what I did- I moved to Los Angeles from Toronto for the iPhone! (ok, not really....)

BTW:

What is "Canada"?

Is that the extension of US land to the north????

No, it's the country to the north that has universal healthcare, unlocked iPhones, lots of oil, and doesn't require 2 years of distracting campaigning prior to an election to elect a new leader.:D

Sure I Understand...

Yes. Unfortunately I can't prove anything due to NDA - so I understand and accept the "grain of salt" comment but I have personally seen enough to convince me. I think you'll see it right at the end of Q2 and delays are possible but the paper deal is already done. It isn't in the throws of being done. It is already done. The one thing I was told was that the announcement and launch will be only days from each other. They have lots of other devices in stock and they don't want to announce early for fear of killing sales too early. And, I don't think not having a trademark will stop anything. A Canadian company (Comwave Telecom) had already trademarked the term iPhone so (and this is a pure guess) maybe Apple paid off Comwave and is now doing paperwork to complete the process. Remember anyway, Cisco had iPhone trademarked and Apple still launched prior to resolving it.

But we'll see eventually as it unfolds...

That still doesn't justify the "SOON" part in the title of your thread.....

But the announcement of the Canadian iphone's debut at the WWDC 08 will.

note: I will refrain from expressing my pwnage over you concerning this until then. :D

Ummm.... no it won't. June isn't soon. Tomorrow or next week from now is soon. WWDC 08 is over 2 months away.

pwnage? lame. :D

Although I disagree with you and the silly title you gave to your thread, I do hope that the iPhone lands officially in Canada sooner rather than later. I have a ton of friends that would love to get one, not to mention my mother and sister. It's a shame that Apple couldn't force a deal on Rogers like it did with the other providers. Hopefully it can be worked out by the end of the year, in time for that holiday that's all about buying stuff.

So the basis of your claim of my un-pwnage-ment of your concerning my thread title is that you consider 2 measly months not soon??
There is a difference between soon and immediate. And as far as companies releasing products is concerned a release next week would be considered immediate.
Two months is VERY soon. I imagine that Apple N company is extremely busy right now getting everything ready for WWDC 08. And they probably scrambling with 2 months to go.
Before you know it WWDC will be here.

ahhahaha awesome....

I see we'll take have to take a trip south and burn your White House down again. :p

You might as well buy a few iPhones while you're down this way.... eh? :D

Take a look at what 9 to 5 mac just uncovered......http://www.9to5mac.com/niagra-iphone-att-rogers-2345234

Rogers who?? :D

I have T-Mobile and they're just awesome. Their customer service is, like Apple, top notch.

If you get T-Mobile, looks like we'll be going up there to get phones...
