Nope, goes away. And I am working with my exchange admins now and they can't seem to figure out where to configure this at on the exchange/activesync server.

well that is interesting.... so since ALL i have is 1 minute, if i delete my exchange mail account they should all come back? but that's not gonna happen because i need that account... if you delete it and re-configure the account does the "never" option stay?

Well my IT guy says they have never had any restrictions and it worked fine before the upgrade. He has be looking around on the server configs and doesn't even see where to configure this at.

Yes, my IT dept. at work actually has an info sheet for us when we sign up internally for active sync (to get our work email from MS exchange) that says it's mandatory to have a lock time.

I noticed this a while back (pre 3.0) when I entered my work's exchange info.

My IT guy found where to configure it at but he says "yes it is configuable but it doesn't take a blank value and max time is 1 hour". And even when he set it to 1 hour the "never" button comes back. It just has the 1 thru 5 minutes.

There should be a sticky about this.

NEVER simply update with a firmware update as large and as different as 3.0. Just restore completely and you will never have issues like this. I can almost guarantee this is because of some plist file or whatever not being updated. This is what happened with people who had dev 3.0 and then somehow kept their battery percentage number.

Avoid problems and just wipe it clean!

Well I did a clean wipe and restore and it still occurred so thats is not a fix. Apple flat out told me it is out of their control at this point and that people need to go to apple.com/feedback and express their concerns for them to look at it and try to implement a fix. I have already done so and hope that for all of you that are concerned about this, you will go there too and mention this "BUG" in my oppinion.

Well I have a cradle in my truck and I want my phone on at all times. Especially now with navigation apps coming out, I don't want my phone shutting off every 5 minutes when I am trying to watch my maps. There are plenty of other apps out there too that you need your phone on at all times.
Every other phone in the world has an option to keep the phone on at all times and never sleep. This is ridiculous if you ask me.

Why do you need "Never"? What do you do with your iPhone?

Does your cradle have a power supply added? If so, then your iPhone may not ever turn the screen to sleep but rather dim the light settings when not in use for 5 minutes.

I'm definitely not an exchange server admin, so I don't know the details.
Wish I could help out.

This was definitely happening for me, pre 3.0 though.

Well after fighting with Apple support for a few hours it looks like it is an exchange thing. When I removed my mail account, the "never" button returned. They said this is new in 3.0 and that our exchange admins have to configure something in activesync to get this button back. This sucks as this worked all the time in previous firmwares.

It sucks that they added functionality that provided a level of security to companies who use exchange servers so that more people could use iphones because their guidelines demand this kind of functionality?

Go talk to your exchange administrator if you have a problem with it.

Read the thread dude.....I DID!!!

Well yes its powered up in the cradle but it make no difference it keeps going to sleep after the 5 minutes...

haha Apple just released this:

https://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2009/06/18/apple-releases-iphone-configuration-utility-2-0/

I wonder if this will fix this problem but the download for the utility doesn't even work.

Wow density abounds. This is caused by exchanges security policies. Don't like this? Don't use exchange.

But how dare Apple release a function that was the final hurdle for many companies to adopt the use of iPhones in their infrastructure. I can't believe they would help out companies in such ways. I bet they did it just to spite you. </sarcasm>

I have been working with our exchange/activesync admins for hours now and they definitely said this is a bug because there is nowhere in exchange or activesync to configure something for this. I have talked with Apple AGAIN and explained our findings and now they say they are going to look into it after numerous times telling me it was not there problem.

It's not a feature, it's a BUG. Features are meant to be configurable and this can't be configured like Apple keeps saying it can. Why would they implement something that can't be tweaked when they have all these new apps coming out like the NAV apps that need the phone to stay powered up. I wouldn't mind if this worked like this on battery power but when it is powered up....Come on. There has to be a way to keep this thing on at ALL times.

My expertise is Unix administration and software development, none of it the least bit Windows related, and even I can figure this one out.

How about unchecking the timeout option altogether instead of trying to give it a value?

Ding! Fries are done.

Caveat: I didn't try this myself, I just Googled it and got the documentation from Microsoft. Anybody can do this...

Nice, what did you google to get this screen shot?

Are you on exchange?

Some exchange admins require the phone to autolock with a passcode after a certain amount of time.

Bingo!

Your admins are idiots. Mine has not had the "never" option ever since I sync'd up to Exchange and loaded the security profile they forced on me.

There is not an option anymore for "never". Only 1 thru 5 minutes. This bites. I don't want my phone to keep shutting down after 5 minutes. This better just be a bug. Why has nobody else brought this up?

You like your screen to always be on with no lockscreen?

I like it when mine goes to lockscreen. That way no buttons get tapped when it is in my pocket

I am not talking about when its put away but when I am using it, it needs to stay on. How the heck we going to use the new NAV apps and the like in our vehicles when the damn thing keeps turning off. This is just a plain out bad "feature" even it is for security purposes. If ones company is any good they will encrypt everything anyway like our company does. The damn button was there in the last version.

This had been bugging me quite a bit, I run my own exchange server and I was wondering about this. I found this related to exchange 2007, I can't test it because I sold my 3G but it seems logical:

"
Hi Guys, i have worked out what it was, in exchange 2007 the active sync policy had require password un-ticked but had options selected for minimum password length, number of failed attempts etc ticked. Now these should not have been applying as the require password was unticked which blanks everything else out, so i ticked require password and cleared all the options then unticked require password again.

This has solved the problem and i have an active exchange mailbox synch with the never auto lock enabled.

Hope this helps Guys.

Chris.
"

yup exchange is the culprit. i just removed my exchange account and never came back right away. didn't even need to reboot! it's not a .plist.

WTF is up with you people? He is asking for help on why never has disappeared not WHY he doesn't lock his screen.

I swear some of the threads over here make me want to break something! The sheer amount of stupidity is mind-boggling.

Break your phone :D...and EXCUUUUUUSE ME. I thought he was saying he liked his phone to never go into lock screen mode. If he isnt, then why dont you help instead of posting this garbage?

I've helped plenty of people if i can and ask for it too.

I dont know, maybe im not sure what you mean but you can set the screen to stay on for 5 min. I dont know if it still has "never" as an option with 3.0 since i havent got it yet.
In anycase, the only time ive ever put mine on "never" is when im downloading something that is kinda big. Other than that, i have it go off in a minute.

BTW, i also use a Garmin GPS instead. It is better and the battery dont last very long on your phone if you use the GPS on it.

Thanks but that is the whole point of this thread is that the "never" option is now gone with the new firmware. Maybe it's just me, but i highly doubt it, but I don't like my phone to ever shut off unless I turn it off myself.
And about the NAV, when it is docked in my truck and powered from the cigar lighter, I dont have to worry about the battery.

Auto Lock 3.0

I can confirm what Chris posted earlier the fix to this is simple, I am a IT admin that runs an exchange 2007 server. I too like to have my iphone set to never on the auto lock feature because I tend to always lock it myself and hate when it locks on my docking station.

On the exchange server launch the exchange management console

Open

>>>>Organization Configuration

>>>>Client Access

>>>>Right click on the default activesync mailbox policy and select properties

>>>>Select the password tab

If your IT admin requires a password lock you are probably just SOL. In the event there is no password lock and the require password was un-checked in the first place make sure all fields have been unchecked and looks like the attached image.

Also I had to restart my iphone after all settings were cleared and applied only then did my "never" option re-appear.

Awesome man !

I just registered a new account to confirm that this works ! Good stuff.
Oh and to all the haters, if you don't have anything constructive to say, maybe you shouldn't say anything at all...

Thanks again.

I have my auto lock set to 1 minute and when the phone is plugged in using apps like maps or ipod it does not lock ever, just dims. This is something the app can control and override.
