Yes, there are no sensors on this freakin ram.

It works ok though. No problems with the machine. The other 2 sets of ram are another story.

So, I want memory that works in 8 core, has sensors, and is not $1000 for 4gb and has a return policy where I am not robbed if it doesn't work.

DOES THIS PLACE EXIST???

Also what the hell does "Limited lifetime warranty mean"??

Every warranty you will ever get on anything is a limited warranty. If it were an unlimited warranty, then you could do anything you wanted to the product (dunk it in Coca Cola, set it on fire, step on it, then run it through a meat grinder) and then demand a full refund 5 years later. So every warranty has limits, that's the way it works.

So whats up CanadaRam. Do you work for data memory systems? I see you recommend them alot. I like the idea of TESTED ram. So what actual brand of ram is the data mem?

Well, I received 2x2GB replacement RAM modules from OWC today and have had my system running all night. Everything seems fine. No ECC errors...

I'll turn the A/C off tomorrow when I go to work and leave my machine running to see how it runs when the ambient temps are high.

Consider smcFanControl as an insurance policy. If your RAM is registering too high for you, up the speed. Of course, if your RAM doesn't have sensors, Up them too ;)

It's free.

I adhere to that. My DIMMs were running close to 80°C (only 1 and 2 in raiser A, the rest where cooler) and I put Smcfancontrol to set the CPU and the rear fans to 700rpm. That is keeping them below 70°C without making the computer noisier.

By the way, I use Hardware Monitor since iStat pro doesn't give me the RAM temperatures

No I don't work for them. I have had my own RAM company in Canada for over 16 years however, and I know a little bit about the industry.

I have dealt with DMS for over 6 years, and I know their service and products are topnotch. The brand of chips on the RAM varies (Micron, Samsung, Elpida, Hynix): but the key point is that they test their modules and guarantee compatibility.

But don't take my word, call them and time how long it takes for you to get a Mac-knowledgeable person on the phone who can help you choose the right RAM. (Hint, you will need a stopwatch).

Then try that with any of the bigbox discounters or PC generic sellers.

If you value service, the choice will be obvious.

What temp do you keep your RAM at?

-tribe3

Well, I have all slots occupied, yielding 10gb and boku heat.

I run them at 1490rpm and at 23degrees C, I find they stick around 65degrees C.

Good margin for error there I think.

Even at that speed, it only sounds a low "whooshing" and you have to be close. Nothing like my long-gone Quicksilver.

Only real downside is I watch the dust more closely.

Got my crucial ram today. Perfect. Came with cool blue heat spreaders too. Thanks crucial.

Oh yeah, the crucial ram I just got have temp sensors. Transintl ram does not. Stay clear.

is Fully Buffered less stable then say normal or unbuffered ram? or are you just some sort of bad luck charm.

also suneohair as a demi you can delete your own posts.

Yes, FB-DIMMs are designed to be more stable than ordinary ram by allowing Error Correction Code but they usually have higher lantency and timings but in the workstation market stability is much more important.

Patrick,

Are you running 1490rpm on a Mac Pro or a MBP?

Does it look like the pic that someone posted here that looks exactly like Apple OEM ram?

Crucial Ram just went up! Doh! I will call in and ask them to go back down for me. Will order on monday.

Yeah, the 2GB DIMMs went up:confused: I hope it's not because of the involuntary advertisement that I made for them... I should get at least a couple of free sticks for that:D

Anyways, If you're not planning on going beyond 8GB of RAM why don't you buy the 1GB DIMMS? I don't think there is much need for more than 6 GB for the average heavy user. Even 4 GB is pretty much enough for PS and Aperture/lightroom combined

ramjet?

Pardon my ignorance...maybe i just missed it....

is there a reason why no one has mentioned ramjet? I bought two 2gig sticks from them. prices are better than cruicial....and i haven't had any problems whatsoever.

Looks like RamJet has the 4 gig kit (2x 2gb sticks) for $399.00 That doesn't sound too bad.

I also noticed LOADS of people selling Mac Pro RAM pretty cheap on Ebay. But the kicker is, all of their feedback is really really good. ONe of the brand names was Optival. Can't remember the rest.

Slighgtly off topic, but how do I test my Mac Pro's memory? I only know how in Mac OS 9 :D What utility should I use? Or is there something built into the Mac OS?

Prices don't mean anything. Crucial is a good and trusted brand name, and recently they changed their heatsinks...and it looks exactly like the Stock Apple RAM. Also they use Micron chips on their ram, which is pretty good.

I honestly don't believe there is any real difference between any of the RAM, especially not a temp sensor. Whats more, do you have any real proof of this? There is no special interface for temperature, so unless you have popped of the HSs and saw a difference I call FUD on this.

Don't spread misinformation.

Also, high fan spinup is normal for any Mac when returning from sleep.

There are differences in memory. It's all in what tolerances you will accept for return of the data bits/ecc bits. Some of the cheaper places in general will accept lower tolerances (+/- % of spec)

NOt saying that's what happened here. The temp sensors are on the memory card last I heard, there wasn't anything on the DIMM itself.
