What's up with the gargantuan Touchpad?

The touchpad on my 13" is already huge, but why take up double the space? So the user has no handrests anymore? I don't get it.

I want apple pencil to work on it ... thought thats why they were doing it but apparently not ... I'm confused

This thread is proof that people will complain no matter what Apple does. And to answer your question, try placing your index fingers on the G and H keys, and draw an invisible line down from the outer edge of the command keys. That is approximately where the new trackpad ends. For me my hands rested don't impinge on that border.
