while i agree with you, yes ios 6 and earlier had a really great design, and it was better looking than 7/8, 8 is a great os. so many features that make it worth an update. i'm personally keeping my ios 5 and 6 devices where they are because you can never go back, but if you could downgrade a5 devices, i'd update them in a heartbeat.

As far as the UI goes, I split it down the middle. On my iPhone, I love the look introduced with iOS 7 and think it's a much better fit for a smaller device. After getting used to iOS 7, iOS 6 on my iPod touch just looks clunky by comparison.

OTOH, I chose to keep iOS 6.1.3 running on our iPad 3 after I saw how iOS 7 looked on my parents' iPad 2 and my daughter's iPad mini. The labels seemed too slight for the larger screen, and on a non-retina display I had to increase the contrast just to make the text labels legible for my parents' eyes. For whatever reason, the look of iOS 7/8 didn't translate to the larger screen quite as well. I'd be interested to see how iOS 8 looks on the 6 Plus.

iOS6 was stale, old, ugly and limited.
Limited doesn't have much to do with looks. As for stale and old and ugly, plenty people don't find it that way. Subjectivity isn't universal nor is it right or wrong or good or bad.

I agree that some of the icons were much better in iOS prior to iOS 7(CAMERA, SETTINGS), but iOS 7/8 have grown on me overall. It may not have a look that screams- touch me- it is better and getting out of the way disappearing into the background due to the flatness not drawing your eye all over the place.

It was time to change the look and feel, even if I'm not totally enamored with the look of iOS8, I think that the old design days had to come to an end because it was looking very dated. They'll eventually get a look nailed down that works well for it.

I miss the stability and smoothness of iOS 6, but the feature set of iOS 8 simply blows 6 out of the water.

I do feel that iOS has grown less stable and isn't as smooth graphically, but I think these growing pains will eventually be worked out. I loved iOS 6, but looking back on it it looks so old...

...EXCEPT for the black menu bar, I miss that so much.

So... You're telling me you'd rather have something like this?

Oh wow, that brings back memories (even though that never existed).

I couldn't agree more, although this discussion is in the realm of chocolate vs vanilla; which is better.

well the question was what was wrong with the interface...

and the interface was limited. there was no control centre...so in that way the interface was limited in how users could control the iPhone...

interface is not merely aesthetics

I believe interface was meant as interface not actual features and functions as those of course get added and enhanced as newer versions of the OS are released and clearly newer ones would automatically be better simply based on that, which doesn't make for much of a comparison.

first i didnt like the new iOS UI. then i looked at my old ipod touch for the furst time in a year and i was shocked how did we ever think it looked good lol so very dated

This is exactly how I felt - hated iOS 7 at first, got used to it (without actually realising I'd grown to like it), but when I then picked up an iOS 6 device months later I was like "ugghhh".

Even now, if I open an app that use the old iOS 6 style keyboard, I think "ewww".

yes but interface includes user experience....

if you must be so nitpicky...

Interface can include that sure, or can not depending on what aspects are being discussed. As for stale and dated, sure from the point of view of it simply being around for some time, which doesn't on its own relate to how good or bad something is. As for ugly, that's purely up to individuals, so that's not a measure of anything really as plenty can find it the opposite of ugly.

I loved IOS 6. When IOS 7 came out I hated it and still do, I decided to take a year off from Apple. I'm back for now, but still wonder why things that worked great like Safari had to change. It sucks now. IMO.

Sure, but it was being treated as something objective it would seem. Not to mention that wrong doesn't really apply to aesthetics and design (short of it breaking something essentially) as everyone has different taste and what someone might like someone else might not, but it doesn't make something right or wrong or even good or bad.

iOS 6 was a more polished design - uniformity is key. iOS 7/8 is still disjointed in places.

In saying that, it doesnt help that during the early days of iOS all they had to cater for is one 320 x 480 screen.

now, it's 640x960, 640x1136, 750x1334, 1080x1920, 765x1024,1536x2048.......

I hope none of this comes across as rude, because I truly don't mean it to be, but I can't believe it's a year after iOS 7's big redesign and people are still creating new threads about how they don't like it and want to go back to iOS 6.

iOS 6 was great, the design was great and even though it feels dated to some people now, some people still like it. I get that, but what I don't get is this need to dwell on something for so long.

I use iOS not because of what any of that looks like, but because it is in my opinion the best mobile software running on the best mobile devices. I believe that's what we should focus on.

We need to accept the things we cannot change, move on, and focus our energy on the future instead of constantly looking back to the past.

That's just my silly little opinion. :)
