What’s your default browser on Sequoia?

Been using BRAVE on my Windows gamer and like it so far, so installed and made it default on my MBA. I like the SYNC feature that works between MAC and PCs. Tried to warm up to Safari and just couldn't (too many decades on Windows LOL).

I use Safari 99% of the time unless I need to use a website that has that USELESS cloud fare ****, then I use Firefox for them. Otherwise Safari rocks.

Safari for 95% of usage. It's efficient and works for my uses. At this point the only time I have site compatibility issues is due to content blockers which is tradeoff I'm fine making.

Firefox for specific use cases. While I could use Safari profiles, I prefer isolating my sensitive browsing to an entirely separate browser with no extensions and maximum security and cookie settings. I chose Firefox for this due to familiarity and because it's not chromium.
  • Logged into Gmail to keep it isolated from my general Safari searches.
  • Logging into banking sites.
  • Occasional site that doesn't work in Safari with content blockers.

Firefox for something like 80% of web browsing. The other 20% divided between Brave and Safari.

I use Safari on my personal Mac and Edge/Firefox on my work PC. Edge for work and Firefox for personal browsing.

I've debated switching to Firefox for all (apart from Edge). There are a few features it has that I quite like including website keywords and sync between mac and PC. I was also quite excited when Apple launched Safari profiles, but it seems to be a half baked feature that will not be further developed.

I don't do a ton of dedicated web browsing on my iPhone, so the sync has never been that important to me. I could also just use Firefox on my iPhone.

The one thing holding me back would be password integrations with iCloud Passwords.

Apple has produced an extension for Firefox called - naturally enough - 'iCloud Passwords'. It allows Firefox users access to your Keychain, as used by Safari.

Incidentally, there's also Orion - basically uses the guts (Webkit and security features) of Safari, but also allows the installation of a significant number of both Firefox and Chrome extensions.

I think this Firefox extension only works on macOS. You can't use it on Windows, even though Apple has provided Chrome and Edge extensions that do work on Windows.

I also use Firefox on my iPhone, specifically so that I can sync with Firefox on my laptops (Mac for personal use and still have a Windows box for work). I was glad when Apple finally added a "default browser" selection to iOS.

I’m curious to know what is your default browser on Sequoia.
I’m sometimes tempted to switch to another browser than Safari but always come back to it.
Work Mac is standardized on Chrome. On my personal Mac I still use Safari

Edge is default, but I also have Edge Dev, Chrome, Vivaldi, Brave, and Firefox open at all times, each of which serves a different type of content. Never Safari for anything.

I want to be able to disable JavaScript for individual sites, something I came to expect from Mozilla/NoScript. But lacking on iOS and iPadOS.

Because I use Android and Windows along with Apple having cross-platform is a must. Refuse to use Chrome.

In the past I dabbled with Brave, Opera, OmniWeb (really liked their browser and sad to see it go). And of course Furefix but not in last ten years.

Is that too much to ask?

It's interesting to see what folks use to browse with. I never heard of Orion and may check it out.

I've only had my new Mac Mini for a couple months, and
Performa 575.jpg
(the Performa 575 in all her beige glory)

this ^ was the last Mac that I owned around 30 years ago, which I want to say used Netscape Navigator.

All that time between then and now been with Windows using IE for awhile then mostly Firefox, until the past couple years with Librewolf. Never even tried Safari during that time assuming it was strictly for Mac, which only found out later ended up being the case.

With that context, wasn't sure what to use starting out with the new Mini.

In looking at some info about Sequoia before getting the Mini, saw a suggestion for Brave instead of Safari. So, that's what I've been using these past couple months.

I did try Safari once recently running through my 50 or so bookmarks that all work perfectly fine with Brave, but unfortunately there were a few that didn't. I will say though that the sites that Safari worked fine with, they seemed to load incredibly fast. Maybe future updates will work for all sites that fast? We'll see, fingers crossed.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk 🤪

Technically I no longer have a default. I use 3 different browsers for specific tasks that I've bucketitzed them into profile use.
  • Brave - I use primarily for Streaming video, i.e. Youtube, podcasts, etc, but I also use Brave for general searches for information. But I interchange that task between Brave and Firefox.
  • Firefox - I use for social media only, i.e. Discord, IG, FB, Reddit, etc
  • Safari - Banking, Shopping and within Safari I created profiles for each. Only reason ease of use with 2fa and bio-metric security with touch ID when logging into sites or making purchases.
I used to be all in with Brave only with different profiles for each of those I listed above. But at some point a update broke the audio handling of Brave. Like for some reason sometimes youtube audio would just stop if I click on my other profile and there happens to be some video/audio clip playing. i.e. a news site or something. And the only way to recover the audio in youtube would be to completely close the browser. It's been happening with multiple iterations and versions of Brave. So I just gave up and only use it with the one profile use. And the frustrating thing is it's not easily duplicated, the error. Just seems to randomly happen. It might have been fixed by now, but I don't care enough to switch back, lol.

Safari all the time, it's battery efficient and fast. It may lack features compared to other browsers but it works fine for me.

An update of note: most recent Norwegian-based Vivaldi (Chromium, but without Google siphoning off your info) now comes with Swiss-based Proton VPN baked in and free. Location of both providers important, as Europe has much stronger privacy and security expectations and laws to adhere to, unlike US-based browsers. Including Safari.

Can you not use another Chromium-based browser? There's a reason that Google doesn't release the source code to Chrome itself....
Oh, maybe. Honestly there's no personal info in play as it's just work stuff.

What's the best Chromium alternative to Chrome?

A question like that is likely to get the same kind of response as 'Should I use an anti-virus app on my Mac?' 😏

However, as noted elsewhere, if a Chromium browser is required, I use Vivaldi - now with the highly-regarded Proton VPN baked in for free. Both products are European, so built with the security and privacy expectations that part of the world demands.
Similarly, I also use Startpage as my search engine, for the same reason.
