Newb question- how do you create custom ringtones? I thought the newest version of iTunes didn't allow you to make your own

(1) Grab any 30 sec MP3 file or trim a longer one to 30 secs in Audacity
(2) Save it to, say, My Documents\My Music\ringtones
(3) Start iTunes, go to Music, Add File to Library, select MP3 as above
(4) Right click that file and select Create AAC version
(5) Select the second newly created file, copy it to Desktop
(6) Delete both files from iTunes Music library and close iTunes
(7) On Desktop, rename the .M4A file to .M4R
(8) Open iTunes, go to Ringtones folder, Add File to Library then select the desktop file

Hope this helps.

Actually you can add a 40 second ringtone. Not sure when it happened, but I've been making mine 40 seconds for a while now.

Anyway, mine is the theme song from the exorcist - tubular bells.

Or you select a song that isn't protected in iTunes (most songs from the store aren't anymore which is good), then you select 'Get Info", then go to 'Options' and change the start and stop times to the time you want. Then right click the song and choose 'Create AAC version'.
This will create another song of the same name and info, just only the section you selected earlier. Then take this song, drag it to the desktop. Then change the file extension from .m4a to .m4r and then just drag back into iTunes. There you have it, a quick easy way to make custom ringtones using only iTunes ;), you can then delete the version you made earlier because it is useless now.

LOL @ you guys who still use a song...wtf is this 2003?

No one wants to hear your obnoxious music. Grow up already.

I have different ringtones for different contacts; but the default is (part of) the instrumental version of "Billie Jean".

I totally agree. Everyone here should be using the default monotone and plain ringtones that Steve gives us.
We should be lifeless tools with zero imagination and have no taste or individuality either. Shame on all of us. Now lets bow our heads in shame.... :p

My main ringtone is from Dr. Horrible - Brand New Day
For my brother it is one I made up, it starts out with "Hello Master" and then goes into Pick Up the Phone.

I had the Imperial March for my wife, but she thought people might get the wrong impression when they discovered it was my wife calling.
