People tell me I have some kind of bizarre hybrid accent - guess it's a midwestern thing.

However my relatives out in rural Kansas don't wash their clothes, they "warsh" them.

Are you serious? I thought "warsh" was a Hoosier thing...

I'm really bad about the "pop" thing. I don't say "ain't", though - I'm a grammar freak and cannot stand ANYONE who says that.

Oh, back on topic - I don't like Minnesota accents. They bug me.

Give me a good ol' Midwest accent any day. Just not hick. Anything but that!

My answer to this question is "none of the above." I live in Great Britain for a year and came to realize how harsh Americans sound in comparison with the Brits while watching the evening news. This was especially striking in the build-up to the first Gulf War--the press conference with H W Bush and Thatcher was especially striking. It was always painful to listen to a Yank, especially one with a strong Southern accent, after being immersed in British English. None of the Brits I spoke with ever complained about my accent--I'm originally from So. Cal. although I don't speak like a surfer--even though nearly all commented on it!

My favorite?

Any except southern. Grossest American accent ever. EVER.

I disagree. Minnesotans are worse. They sort of sound as if they don't have much of an accent, but its just enough to really drive you insane.

Southern accents at least aren't shy. They're there, there's no mistaking them.
