I just upgraded from the 4 to the 4S today, and the next upgrade eligibility is 6/2013. I'm the primary line with AT&T, and my line is more than $100 voice and data before the FAN discount. Too bad AT&T dropped the 12 months upgrade on the primary line.

It's just not AT&T. It's sprint, Verizon. Even tmobile USA you have to wait almost 22 months even with primary line.

I just wished cell companies gave us option where u pay full price for phone in exchange for cheaper plans. But in the USA you gotta use the upgrade as soon as possible to reset your cycle cause you pay the same either way.

My mom's is 6/12/13 because I used her upgrade.

Mine is 3/08/12. She said she absolutely never wants a smart phone, so I can basically upgrade every year if I wanted to, which I won't.

+1

It's going to be funny when the people who upgraded to the 4S almost demand that they should be able to upgrade to the 5 when it comes out next year.

No it's not. I want every generation on the first day at the discounted price. Every time.

So can someone clarify? My upgrade date is 05/09/13. After 12 months, does this mean I won't the usual 400/500 upgrade prices anymore?

iPhone 4S Purchase: 10/17/2011
iPhone Upgrade Eligibility: 5/18/2013

kinda sucks cause:

iPhone 3GS Purchase: 9/19/2009
iPhone Upgrade Eligiblity: 2/19/2011 (I held out til iPhone 4S to redeem)

17 Months vs 19 Months

So basically, if I just now signed up with Verizon, what will the penalty be in July of 2012 (just assuming the i5 comes out then)?

Does the ETF reduce as each month goes by?

I'll get my fully subsidized upgrade then, just as I have for every release.

U won't anymore. AT&T changed the upgrades. No more 12 month upgrades. No more iPhone exceptions. Read my post earlier.

T-Mobile used to offer such several plans (called "Even More Plus") that were$20 cheaper per month than the contract plans. They even offered financing to deal with the "sticker shock" of $500-700 phones. However, few people signed up so they dropped the program. They still have a few contract-free plans, but they are about the same as their "Value" plans with no subsidy.

No I am talking about two different things.

1. You used to be able to get a 12 month upgrade if your primary line was $99 (voice/data excludes texting and excludes secondary lines). You could have gotten whatever phone you wanted every 12 months Ina 24 month contract.

2. AT&T made special exceptions from 2008-2010 on iPhones for upgrades.

A. 2008 (anyone with current iPhone 2007 was eligible for an upgrade at full subside price $199). I had just upgrade to an HTC windows phone in May 2008 full subsidize price. I put sim and reactivated iPhone 2007 in June. Bam I got another upgrade in July 2008 for the iPhone 3G $199/299 price.

B. 2009. For the 3GS AT&T moved up your eligibility date by up to 3 months. So those who would have been eligible in September 2009 got to upgrade in June 2009 for the 3GS

C. 2010. Because AT&T knew their exclusive contract with Apple was ending in the USA they made anyone who would have been eligible up until Dec 31st 2010. Those people got their upgrades moved all the way up to June 2010 so AT&T could lock you into another 2 year contract.

I have been with AT&T (Cingular) for almost 8 years. I know all the ins and outs of almost everything they have to offer.

I post a lot over on Howard forums the past 7 years so have also learned a lot of those guys/gals.

FYI. In the spring 2011 AT&T changed their 12 month upgrade policy. They are not giving people 12 month upgrades any more (again this 12 month upgrade is a totally different exclusive different unwritten policy with the iPhone). Now you have to wait 18-21 months.

The reason people don't know about this chance is because most people on the 12 month upgrade cycle were waiting for what Apple had to offer. For the few who used their upgrade with the 12 month cycle (mainly android users upgrading to Atrix/Infuse 4G/HTCa Inspire. Those people did post over on Howard forums how even after 3-4 months after using their upgrade they no longer got their usual 12 month upgrade.

AT&T has done away with 12 month upgrades. Verizon did the same. Sprint is getting rid of their Sprint premiere 12 month upgrades also.

The cell phone carriers (at least the big 3) are all following each other. ETFs $325-350. Sprint was last hold out. But even sprint increased their ETF in September from $200 to $350.

Well everything in your above post looks right except one thing. You say that the early upgrade exceptions for just having an iPhone ended in 2010 but I got early upgraded at the release of the 4S just like every other year since 2009. What makes you think they have stopped the early upgrades for prior iPhone owners.

AT&T may budge one month for fully subsidy upgrade.

What was your exception for your upgrade? When did u last upgrade full subsidy?

Remember that AT&T is letting current users who normally get their 12 month upgrade complete the upgrade this one last time (I brought in June 2010 and was eligible for full subsidy in June 2011). So now I used my full subsidy upgrade I won't be able to get the full subsidy upgrade until May 2013.

They haven't stopped them, but I believe I read that you can only use the early upgrade after 16 months now which is only 6 months prior to the 22 months. I can't remember the exact wording because someone else on here explained it.

We aren't talking about partial upgrades. We are talking about full subsidy uPgrades.

I don't see the point of AT&T stopping 12 month upgrades once they lose their exclusivity. Isn't that good pull for customers to stay with them? Wouldn't it be more advantageous to have 24 month upgrades during their exclusive years since people are forced to stay with them anyways?

Got my iPhone 4S on Friday 10/28 and new upgrade date is for 5/29/2013. my new line that I recieved from my parents family plan is up for an upgrade, but that line is using my old iPhone 4.

Got the 4S on launch day and mine says 5/14/2013. I think mine will move up to 1 year if my bill is paid each month on time. It has been that way for the past two years.

You guys/gals are either in denial or aren't reading.

As I have stated. AT&T has done away with 12 moth upgrades

People haven't realized this because the majority of them who normally got 12 month upgrades were waiting to see what the new iPhone would be.

Those who had 12 month upgrades and used them in June-2011 on various phones like atrix/infuse 4g/inspire. Those who used the upgrades over on Howard forums and android forums have all complained they aren't eligible for 12 months anymore even after 3-4 months owning their phones.

This is a system wide change AT&T made in spring 2011.

No one wants to listen or read. People are in denial.

Check back on this post in one year and see who is right.

This isn't about iPhones. This is about an AT&T system wide chane for upgrades.

Verizon did away with 12 month upgrades early this year. Sprint did away with 12 month upgrades also in September. This is a nation wide policy change with the major carriers.

It sucks. But what can u do about it.

The last Full subsidy iPhone I got was the iPhone 4 on release day. My upgrade was set for January 2012 but was brought forward just before pre orders started. It has happened that was every year so i hope the next iPhone release is the same. If not I should be able to sell the 4S for $450 and pay the $300 difference for a full retail version. That's just like paying the upgrade price. Then when the next iPhone rolls around I'll be eligible for full subsidy and be able to sell my iPhone 5 (?) for more then the 5S (?) will cost me on subsidy. Thats the plan anyway. We'll see how it goes.

Personally I think that alot of these people, like me, where not on the 12 month upgrade plan and just saw AT&T move up there upgrade date each year right before the new model was realeased. That's what has happened to me each year and I hope it happens next year too. I know you say AT&T has stopped that but you have offered no proof of that other then your word and this being the internet I am afraid that does not go very far. I'll just wait and see what happens.

Whenever I want the next iPhone I will be eligible.

It's one of the reasons I am so loyal to AT&T, they allow an upgrade every year. I've had every iPhone and quite a few Android models including the latest SGS II at the upgrade price.

Between that and stellar call quality, terrific coverage and friendly customer service I am one very happy & loyal customer.

I also use Verizon since they offer some Androids that AT&T doesn't but I have not had the same exemplary experience with them. They are also just a bit more expensive.

At the end of the day, it's worth it for the choices of phones that these two companies provide me.

Where is your proof on this? I talked to an AT&T rep over the phone not to long ago, granted these people aren't always right. But, they said that if your bill was over $100 a month you would be eligible for an upgrade every 12 months. Pending that you paid your bill on time, yada, yada, yada.

We will just have to revisit this question next year.

Let's just say AT&T along with Sprint, Verizon, have all followed each other. $325-350 ETFs. Sprint and Verizon already getting rid of their 12 month upgrade.

Here is one of links about AT&T upgrade change (no more 12 months upgrades).

http://www.phonecan.com/index.php/my-at-t-upgrade-eligibility

Again you get this one last upgrade (if eligible). But everyone will have to wait from now one.

This policy changed went into effect in the Spring 2011 as I stated.
