i have no idea, mostly because I never reboot my Mac - one of the benefits of being a mac user :)

Why is it unnecessary to reboot a mac?
Doesn't it carry out somekind of maintenance tasks when booting and closing down?

I usually turn my macbook off and unplug when I've finished using it.
How long could I leave it before rebooting and would I notice any adverse effects?

It would be nice to just open up the lid and start working :)

As far as I've seen the past weeks (new Mac user), my Mac Mini works better the longer it runs, except Steam games. I put it to sleep every evening and it has been running for days now without a problem. The only time I restarted was to apply an update.

I was also an App Store upgrade. My start up times and show down times vary substantially. They never take more than 3 minutes, though, but that seems like a century. I wondered why sometimes it's lightening speed like the SL days, and other times it's not so quick.

You make it sound like it's bad to shut down. I don't have to, but I take my laptop places outside of my home and don't want to waste the battery when I'm not using it and can't plug in somewhere...

I didn't get that impression at all. I agree with the statement. The beauty of a Mac is you can run it forever without shutting down. The only time I reboot is when it forces me to (updates, etc.). It performs better with age ;)

I think putting the mac to sleep is pretty much the same as shutting it down am I right?
I don't shut down my mac ever and I only restart when I do apple updates. I hope it is not bad habit.

No - it's designed that way. Leave it running. It they wanted you to shut it down they wouldn't have given you sleep :)

I don't know how long it takes to start up, because I never turn it off. But waking from sleep is only a few seconds.

2010 13" MBP all stock except for 500GB Momentus XT, from chime to ready in 21.3 seconds.

2011 iMac 2.8 GHz i7, 1 TB HDD = ~33 seconds

2008 early MBP 2.4 GHz, 200 GB @ 7200 RPM = 50 seconds

The latter wasn't a fresh install, upgraded it via MAS. It was worse before I reset PRAM, if you're having problems, do that!

That's pretty good! The read speed is what
,300mb?

I think in practice it varies from ~80-200 MB/S. I'm not sure what my numbers are I just looked these up. I've had a positive experience so far with the XT, no issues that you might hear about. Updated the firmware twice now and everything is good, I'd recommend it.

Approx 1 minute. It was half with SL

My 2 year old Celeron powered netbook (Asus Eee 701, $250) starts xp faster than this now.

About 2 minutes. I do have a lot of Apps open which need to be restarted on boot though.

Not bad but mostly unnecessary.

It depends. If you have sensitive files on your Mac, using Filevault 2 and shutting down the whole computer when you are away for a long period of time increases the security of the FDE a lot. If I´m away a few days and my Macbook is not with me, I´m shutting it down completely.

Shutting down is unnecessary to be sure but since I installed an SSD I've been doing it like every 5 minutes just to watch it all come back up in 15 seconds. :D

But that freakin' startup chime has got to go. It's really pissin' off the wife.

I don't understand: Do any of you leave your home with your Mac? Who leaves their computer on to waste battery when they won't be near a plug? It's too difficult to imaging that you're always near a plug and never turn it off.
