That's a beast of a laptop. No way i'd ever spend 4,500 dollars on a computer, but, if you have the money to do it and don't mind spending that much, then that's all that matters.

I don't think I would ever pay $4500 for a laptop.
But hey, that's just me.

Macs really aren't for gaming, whether you invest $4500 or not.

What do you plan on using your computer for?

I absolutely agree. If gaming is very important to you, you are better off looking for a Windows machine. Macs can do an OK job for most people, but if I were spending $5,000 I would expect my computer to do a lot more than an OK job in the purposes most important to me. I guess it just depends if gaming ranks high up in your Top 5 requirements for a computer.

Yeah I know that's gonna be a kick in the face once it get refreshed. But I mean I can either buy it now and see a refresh in 12 months or buy it then and see a refresh in 12 months from then. Lol

I just hope games hold its on with 1980x1200.

As a shareholder of AAPL, I thank you :) Pick up some accessories while you're at it.

Even if you buy a $5000 computer, it just won't last. In a few years, there will be something better and you'll probably upgrade anyways.

If the OP was getting the computer with high specs for gaming, I would buy a cheaper MacBook Pro and perhaps build myself a better gaming PC For $1500 or so. Even that custom PC would beat the MBP with a cheaper price. That's personally how I would go with this whole situation.

Unless a faster machine effects the amount of money I make, I don't think I would ever buy such an expensive machine! Probably because my uses on a computer suck anyways. I'm just that average user who uses basic apps.

If your primary concern is gaming, I'd recommend going with a windows laptop, something like a 2" thick Alienware with dual graphics cards and 1 hour battery life.

If you must go with a Mac, for the price of the 512GB SSD from Apple, I'd either install a 3rd party SSD if you are capable (since you say you want speed), or pay to have someone do it for you. Same with the RAM. You can get the RAM for half the price by ordering it from NewEgg, and its really easy to install.

I'm getting ready to purchase my first Mac which will be a Macbook Pro 17 inch, Specs are as followed:

2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
512GB Solid State Drive
SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
MacBook Pro 17-inch Hi-Resolution Antiglare Widescreen Display
Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
Accessory Kit

Order Total: $4,446.36

My question is, will I be happy with this Macbook pro if I am purchasing it for the follow:

Mid-Hardcore Gaming - Can you?
Fast - Will this be ultra fast?
SSD - is it wroth it

Hmm, the specs on this computer are OK I'd say. Might be a good idea to get two and link them via thunderbolt.

i would strongly suggest buying a vertex 3 SSD instead of apple's SSD

should be about the same price for 512g but the vertex 3 will be way faster with its SATA III support that you won't get with apple's SSD

Link to 500gb vertex 3 for <$900?

Why don't you get a 2.2ghz+ 256gb option and use the savings on an iMac when it gets updated? That way you get far better value laptop which should play most things fine, much less buyers remorse (1900x1200 will tax the GPU in some games if you change from WoW or Sims) and the iMac will be more powerful.

I'd say spending an extra $1500-2000 in this case is a bit overkill, but power to you if you can afford it and are happy with it!

I ordered

I ordered the same thing:

PROCESSOR 065-0294 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
MEMORY 065-0124 8GB 1333MHZ DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB
HARD DRIVE 065-0129 512GB Solid State Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE 065-0131 8x Double-Layer SuperDrive
DISPLAY 065-0133 MBP 17"HR Antiglare WS Display

And got it for just over $3700. . . I am a professional photographer and got a discount using my PPA membership. Hopefully it will be here by the end of the week. . can't wait.

Only a Morron would buy a MacBook with those options. I mean complete Morron. In 10 months time ivy bridge will kick the crap out o this CPU and so will the next gen gpus so get ready to have a laptop that is not even competitive in such a short time (faster ssdd soon, exterior upgrades?)

512 SSd? Dumb. Go aftermarket change it your self.
8 gb apple ram? Dumb. Buy better higher quality ram and put it in yourself.
2.3 ghz CPU? All that extra money for a documented <5% MAX performance boost and only in limite scenarios.

Antiglare? If you just have too much money(like me) and are looking to just check all the options know that to sone people it is worth it. To me, it's fugly. A silver border looks hideous on the pros. The glossy shows deeper blacks and colors and much more brilliant.

Think about it before you waste your money.

Oh and one more thing. If gaming is high on you list I suggest you try it out first. Osx has horrid mouse acceleration that is non adjustable. For games this bothered me so much that I sold my first MacBook pro because of it.

I don't know. . .

Why on earth would anyone buy a Mac and then change the internal hardware with another company's products. .. seriously? Because you know better than Jobs and his engineer's at Apple? Seriously?

If the MBP is so bad, maybe you should take your incite to HP or Dell. ..I am sure they would love to know how to beat Apple. . . they don't seem to have the firm grasp on Apple's deficiencies as you clearly do.

Just one more point, if you don't know why someone would choose the anti-glare option, you can't be helped. I am amaze that you clowns continue to come on these boards if the products are so horrible. Just amazing. . . .sort of feel sorry for your ignorance. ...not really, but it is funny all the same.

And just one more question. . Would you recommend someone with a S class Mercedes replace its engine with a better one? . . . please keep posting, I need to laugh. . .its good for the soul.

I mean as long as I can run Like The Sims 3, World of Warcraft and some decent games at a alright setting, then that's all I really need. I just want to have the ability to run a massive game if needed.

I have the entry-level 13" Pro from 2010 (2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo w. 4GB RAM) and the Sims 3 flies on it. If WoW and Sims 3 are as hard as you're going to push the machine, you'll certainly have no worries!

Because it's cheaper almost 99% of time, and that you can get the exact if not better component by DIY. For example, Apple charges $200 for the 8GB memory upgrade, while you can purchase a similar memory kit for less than $100 (OWC, Crucial, G.Skill, Kingston, etc.) The SSD upgrades this year are actually pretty reasonable ($100 for the 128GB SSD for the 15"), but performance wise they fall behind the Intel's, Crucials, OWCs, etc.

what is this i don't even

are you suggesting that upgrading the RAM or replacing the stock SSD with a faster SATA III is somehow akin to gutting a mercedes engine? bad analogy

PPA FTW! Since anybody can join the PPA at the $100 price for the first year, this seems like a great way to save money on some new hardware.
