You can't do it without a phone, because your number has to be verified, otherwise how is the system supposed to send your messages to the world?
I don't know how. Skype worked without a phone number and it even provided the possibility to send messages and make calls to phones, mobile and landlines. Of course SMS and calls through Skype costed money but it was a very interesting and handy option to have.

I have been using it since before it was bought by Meta and to be honest I have no concerns, I don't use facebook, whatsapp is the only Meta product I use.

Of course it only makes sense if your contacts also use whatsapp, otherwise you can't call them on it.
I don't use any kind of social media and I don't have contacts either (being phone-free). I simply wanted to have the means for some phone calls and messages when necessary, mostly during travel, which for me is just a few times per year at most. Buying and using a mobile phone just for this, obviously does not make any sense. I thought for a moment that WhatsApp was a real replacement for Skype but unfortunately it is not even close (for those without a phone that is).

This. I’m happy for iPad users, but the lack of WhatsApp on Apple Watch is a huge pain.

Literally this is the only app that I really miss and need on my Watch, every single day.

How hard can it be?!

Apple Watch? Works just fine on my Garmin. And most other sports watches.

Really?! While that would be pretty amazing and would make me seriously consider a Garmin, a quick Google suggests it is not true. There is no WhatsApp app for Garmin smartwatches.

It's even better, it works without an app. It sending the apps to the watch. Including SMS, possibly more. Just needs a Bluetooth connection, that's all.

Well of course, you can receive notifications from WhatsApp and send replies. That works on Apple Watch too, including over the cellular network, not just Bluetooth. (Kind of useless anyway if it requires Bluetooth, no? Because the point of having WhatsApp on the watch is to be able to send messages when you don't have your phone with you!)

But that functionality is extremely limited. You're unable to do things like initiate a new message to a random contact, or browse through a list of messages or group chats. I can't imagine how this stuff can work on Garmin if there isn't a native app.

Your second screenshot is from a phone connected to a watching running Wear OS (Samsung, Google, etc watches). Wear OS *does* have a native WhatsApp app. But Garmin watches do not run Wear OS.

All true!

Yup, it merely display messages. Can't imagine wanting to reply on my watch though. Probably will gain that when we simply speak to our watch and it gets send as audio or transcribed and sends it as text.

The unit on my road bike displays these notifications as well, including email. I thinks it's pretty handy, and I can also control music playback from that unit while cycling. Easier than to pull out my iPhone.

As for the original topic, WA on iPad, I simply use a webbrowser. Also on my Mac. Keeping the apps to a minimum, no need to update apps, just Safari.

Another comment here to say APPLE WATCH PLEASE! It’s the only device I desperately need WhatsApp on.

Even though its like WhatsApp for web, but I can finally left my iPhone and use iPad mini exclusively during weekend at home.

Can the Whatsapp ipad app be the sole client running?
I'm not sure if I correctly understand what a 'sole client' means. But I now have WhatsApp on iPad for a number which is only on my iPad. I had to use a mobile phone with the number's sim to set it up on iPad. After that I removed the app from the phone, and inserted the sim back onto the iPad, for data. It's working fine for the past two days. Hoping it would remain working permanently..

Nice, thats close to what I meant. I originally validated my WA account via a VOIP call. If it holds then I would'nt need the iphone anymore as the VOIP app works on iPad as well..
