WhatsApp has released an update allowing iPhone and Android users to send photos over the messaging platform in high resolution, finally addressing the service's low quality image sharing limitation.

Previously, WhatsApp users sending photos would see the images automatically compressed and the resolution reduced to 920 x 1280 to save storage space and keep image-sharing fast over low bandwidth data connections.

After updating, they'll have the option to send images to friends and family in "HD quality," which equates to 3024 x 4032 resolution. The rollout of the feature was announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg via a Facebook post.

Version 23.16.0 of the app adds a "HD" button at the top of the photo sharing screen, next to the other image editing tools. Tapping the HD button brings up a pop-up allowing users to switch from the default Standard Quality to HD Quality.

Recipients of HD photos will see a HD label in the corner of the image, indicating that they have received a higher quality version, and all high resolution images are protected under WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption.

According to Meta, if a user's internet connection is low bandwidth, they will receive photos in Standard Quality, and will be able to choose to keep the standard version or upgrade it to HD where available.

The new feature is rolling out globally over the next few weeks, and Meta says the ability to send high resolution videos over WhatsApp is set to follow soon.

As long as they still remove the capture date and time it is still useless to share photos the other wants to keep via WhatsApp. And all the meme pictures are still good in low quality mode.

I cannot believe that iMessage is the only messenger you can send photos / videos where capture date and time is not removed upon sending. I mean at last ask the sender if he wants the exif data to be included or not.

I just tried it and it seems you need to active the HD option every time again you are sending a photo. Super annoying...

Add this to the long list of deficiencies the "Android is Better" people failed to mention.

I wish iMessage had some controls like this. I'd appreciate some granularity in sending an iMessage so I can distinguish between, say, a photo of a can of soup I'm sending for reference and can be small/compressed, or a photo of my kid which I'd like sent as high resolution as possible. As it is, the only choice is to set a blanket setting that downsizes everything.

I must disagree. My friends and I certainly do not find it useless to share photos we want which do not show the capture date and time. I was at a social event this morning. A couple of hours later a friend who also attended sent me via WhatsApp a few photos she took. I saved them and now they are in my Google Photos under the correct date. I do not need to know if the photos were taken at 10AM or 11AM.

Yeah, you and 5 other people. It's all about adoption rate, and anecdotally, none of my friends are using Signal.
there has actually been a huge improvement when it comes to adoption, I currently have more of my contacts on Signal (about 1/5 of my contact list) than on Telegram.

whatsapp is trash.

no stickers shop
still compresses all your images.
not even a native ipad & mac app
still relies on your phone to log into your mac

what is this...2012 ?

telegram is so much better

This is part of the reason people love iMessage. I am glad Whats App users can now send HD quality images, but I always found it funny even here in the forums when people would make comments like "I use Whats App I don't understand the iMessage vs everything else argument", because although iMessage does lack in some features that other message platforms have it wins in the basic modern times features people actually want. Friends and family that send me videos/photos through other means get so compressed, again I am glad that those who use Whats App gain this capability

Same, I know loads that have now both Signal and Telegram.
Strange thing is it must just be sitting there on their device doing nothing as they still message me over WhatsApp.

Or just uninstalled the app without deleting their accounts. But yeah, no way to know the real number of active users.

And you think Apple's a perfect little angel company? Get real, they all suck.
I totally don't think that.

But I still trust iMessage's end-to-end encryption a little bit more, than Whatapp's one - where original dev left the Whatsapp after it got bought by Zuckerberg and where this dev (founder actually I believe) raised concerns specifically about the privacy and the encryption.

Anyway if I should choose which app I trust the most from this point of view - it's definitely Signal.

If she would have send you the. photo tomorrow and not today they would appear with this date. They always get the date and time of when the y were send. And this is a problem.

Whatsapp has an official Mac app.

And how do you log in to telegram? Ah you need to dial in the code you received a your phone app. That's completely different ;-)

Downloading the app and using it are two very different things. And a 20% adoption rate is useless.
