But then again, it‘s more fun to spread FUD and rock the „but metadata isn‘t“ yadda yadda train I guess.
But at the same time, the metadata isn't. That's still a true thing. And it's still used to piece together your social contacts, frequency and location of messages received and sent. Trivial to fit that in with the truly massive amount of data that can be bought from other sources, yeah? Now Meta has elaborated on their profile of you, which is a big value add for marketers. Maybe you don't give a crap, but recognize others might be more reluctant to make that exchange.

whatsapp is trash.

no stickers shop
still compresses all your images.
not even a native ipad & mac app
still relies on your phone to log into your mac

what is this...2012 ?

telegram is so much better

It isn't relying on a phone anymore, simply use it on your desktop in a native app:

Connect on desktop.png

And they have an option for a poll, simply tab the plus sign and select poll. You'll get running vote count. Very handy.

Also who actually believes the WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption nowadays?

Meta = WhatsApp = Facebook = Zuckerberg.

It's hard to imagine "privacy" in this equation.
When you bring Meta into any equation. Privacy becomes an imaginary number.

Better than nothing I guess, but still quite low resolution in 2023. And also it's not just about the resolution - what about compression ratio?

12MP is nice, but if it's with some nice JPG artifacts then it suddenly is not much of a HD quality...
Low resolution? That's better than HD bro lol

I dont understand, I’ve had this for weeks now and use it regularly. Maybe it came late to the US ? But I seriously doubt that.

Whatsapp has an official Mac app.

And how do you log in to telegram? Ah you need to dial in the code you received a your phone app. That's completely different ;-)
I think what he means is the Mac app is not Apple silicon compatible (and that’s problematic, for example, leave the app after having written a message but not yet sent it and come back to find the app reloading AND the need for you to start writing the message from scratch).

there has actually been a huge improvement when it comes to adoption, I currently have more of my contacts on Signal (about 1/5 of my contact list) than on Telegram.

My cousin stepped off WhatsApp a few years ago when they were acquired by Facebook, and he is now my only contact on Signal. Enough reason for me to have Signal installed next to WhatsApp.

It's just convenient. Everyone already uses it, and no one has any real reason to switch unless you're a privacy nut.

Whatsapp is my goto for texting and video chatting my international family and friends. Unless I'm 007 or a terrorist, I simply don't care about things like Advertising data, Device identifiers, and etc.

If you don't believe it, hire a lawyer and sue, easy money.
That's funny. Nice American thinking. Sue over anything.

No, I definitely won't sue over this. I'm free not to believe and do not sue anyone over this. Also it's more complex than hiring a lawyer. You have to prove such thing and that's impossible due to the closed nature of WhatsApp as stated in few of my previous posts.

The keys to decrypt your messages. If you enable Messages in iCloud (without advanced data protection), Apple has access to them so they can read your chats whenever they want.
They could… but they don’t. And that’s for data retrieval, lose your password and you’d lose your whole life.

And anyway… that only applies if you don’t turn on Advanced Data Protection which allows you to use a Fido key as the encryption key. So… anyone that really cared about the first part, has already done the second.

This whole end to end encryption talk is utterly useless. Ad targeting and finger printing you to sell you to the highest bidder doesn’t need the CONTENTS of your messages. They don’t care. They however can tell ad bots immediately when you are online. They know who you talk to, when, when do you usually come online and go offline, etc etc. all this treasure of metadata is SOLD and used to track you online wherever you go. The Facebook SDK is used by tons of developers in other apps you use. Bought a bunch of stuff in another app? Congrats, WhatsApp knows about it! Encrypting messages ain’t gonna make a difference to their business model, if it did, they wouldn’t have implemented it.

The only single advantage WhatsApp has is that it is cross platform and was so early in the game that it is hard to ask people to use something else. Apple wasted a golden opportunity to kill WhatsApp by not releasing iMessage for Android.

Annoying you have to select the HD toggle every time. I can’t find a way to make it default.

WhatsApp is more encrypted than the iOS Messages app.

On WhatsApp, 100% of the messages you send and receive are E2E encrypted, no matter what.

The Messages app if you are communicating with Android users, messages are non encrypted using old ass SMS. So <100% of the messages you send/receive that are encrypted.

So yeah, if you care about privacy, stop using the iOS messages app

SMS is not iMessage. And you can disable SMS fallback.

Also you actually can't verify that whatsapp e2e encryption claims are true. All you can do is trust Meta, Zuckerberg. Do you trust him? Really?
