When will Whatsapp allow exporting my chat from any platform to a different platform? The underpinnings are there already, just need to be turned on. Why is it taking this long?
Yes this is something that irks me about whatsapp. They should allow cross platform back ups. At this point whatsapp should have their own storage system for back ups.

Outside of US almost no one uses imessage. This news is more relevant than some of you think. Certainly more relevant than the latest updates apple did to imessage

I wish I could get away from WhatsApp, but so many people use it. I have got some Android family members on Viber. What's the best alternative?
wow, i have one person on viber — it's such a waste — what started out as one of the best apps, is now some mock social platform. telegram is pretty cool if you're looking to get away from whatsapp.

Yes, I understand and I agree that the original comment was short-sighted and arrogant. But, as an American all the hate we get from other places because of an overly vocal bunch of blowhards is actually hurtful after a while. I just wanted to say, that we don't all think like that.
c'mon it's a forum — don't take things to heart :)

can't agree — almost everyone i know who's on ios uses messages. but yes — europeans are more likely to use whatsapp.
Only in the US. Outside the US even iOS users are forced to use whatsapp to a great extent because they’re a minority; most people outside the US have non-apple devices and whatsapp is the best way to communicate with them.

Furthermore, outside the US whatsapp is more than just a social network, it’s a work tool. Many businesses use it for their work such restaurants and stores to take orders from customers or car workshops to communicate with their customers. Other independent workers such as plumbers, electricians, carpenters, etc use it to communicate with their customers as well. In some countries such as Mexico even the government uses whatsapp because being multi platform it can reach far more people than using imessage. Right now they even have an automated phone number that people can contact via whatsapp to download ther covid vaccination certificate (of course there’s also the alternative of using a website for those who prefer it).

Is the US one of the few places that still widely used SMS?
Yes, seemingly. And Apple is partly to blame for that because they integrated their own imessage service and SMS in the same app, so many users aren’t fully aware of the difference between the two (i.e., many people aren’t familiar with the meaning of the blue and green bubbles in the iOS messages app, and think they are just doing SMS whenever they send and receive messages using the app).

interesting, had no idea it was used for such things. most of my friends in russia, for instance are on ios devices though. there'll be an android user here and there, but watcha gonna do? it even happens here in the u.s. :)

That's what I've been saying ever since I've been a member of this forum. I haven't met a single person, even with iPhones that uses iMessage.
Everybody uses WhatsApp and refuse to change.
You sound like you’re outside the US. I’m in SF CA and use iMessages exclusively, so does everyone I know, and it works fine with the few Android owners I message as well. We almost all get unlimited text messages with our plans, but I think it’s different outside the US. It really sucks that WhatsApp was consumed by Facebook, really sorry that happened.

As for other feature requests - be nice if they could support the new Focus APIs so choosing notifications by person worked for WhatsApp!

The thing is that using the ios messages app to message non-iOS users such as those who have Android is basically doing SMS. Maybe cost isn’t a concern because you have unlimited sms in your plan, but you still lose most of the standard imessage features such as HD image sharing, sending pdf documents, reactions, direct responses, sending audio messages and many other features. You do, on the other hand, get all those same features in whatsapp for chats with non-iOS users.

Telegram has gotten infamous for being the cesspit for antivaxxers, terrorists and what not. The EU has even asked Apple and Google to kick the Telegram App from their platform stores.

Signal on the other hand is a reputable alternative.

Its arguable, i mean, every tool can be mis-used. What can be done on Telegram that you cant be done on Signal or any other encrypted messenger of that sort.

I get 60GB Internet (5G data connection), text messages and calls + 100 minutes free to other EU countries all and I also pay for the home Internet + TV and all for $15 a month. When I lived in Finland the data connection was unlimited and calls and texts were as well. So I don't think it's different in other countries. The only country where the Internet was expensive (I paid 50€) for 15GB, unlimited calls + regular Internet, which was kind of slow.

I've only just discovered this and wondered if there is any way of having the old style notifications still (i.e. when it just shows WhatsApp - message, like below)? I use my phone at work - and for work - and don't want photos being displayed on my lock screen. Apologies if this has been asked/answered already.

Half the globe says hi.

Unfortunately. Apple had the chance to make iMessage the default messaging tool back in the day, but they blew it by not opening it up.
Way before iMessage became iMessage they actually talked to providers about upgrading SMS to something internet based with e2ee but providers barked and said „no“, so Apple went and did it anyways calling it iMessage and making it Apple exclusive (there is an interview with Scott Forstall out there that roughly outlines this if you‘re interested).

So yeah, they tried but no one wanted to play ball.

How about reactions and the Ipad app? That would be great.
Both is in development. They recently pushed backend updates that allow for reactions to work (and leaked notification toggles for reactions in a TestFlight build). It‘s probably happening in the next few months. The iPad app will happen once they finish multi-device support which is still a mess more or less.

There is a difference between the Focus API (allowing an app to read your Focus status), Time Sensitive Notifications (allowing a notification to break through a Focus status) and Communication Notifications (the thing this article is about).

Communication Notifications natively tie into the Focus status so you can already whitelist contacts and the WhatsApp notifications from them go through your Focus mode and bing your device (no need to whitelist WhatsApp as a whole anymore).

Same here! I don't think this is a privacy-oriented feature and would like to have these old-style notifications back. I would appreciate any assistance for the same.
