There is a difference between the Focus API (allowing an app to read your Focus status), Time Sensitive Notifications (allowing a notification to break through a Focus status) and Communication Notifications (the thing this article is about).

Communication Notifications natively tie into the Focus status so you can already whitelist contacts and the WhatsApp notifications from them go through your Focus mode and bing your device (no need to whitelist WhatsApp as a whole anymore).

Yes, I confirm the allow listed contact mode is now working with WhatsApp for me this week, hurrah. When the update first dropped it wasn't doing it for me, who knows what was going on there, but it is working this week!
