Yeah. I don't know a single person who uses sms anymore. Even grandparents learned how to use Viber which is the most popular messaging app in my country.
Same in my country, Viber is the most used messenger. Which is crazy cause it's full of ads and bloat. I have managed to bring over my family to Signal which is what I use mostly these days. I also use Telegram for a group of friends, which is the most complete messaging app currently imo, if you can ignore the fact it's not encrypted by default.

Indeed… but even in many countries where it’s already ‘safe’ to use iMessage, most people have long stopped using iMessage. Am in London and I literally don’t know anyone who uses iMessage, everyone’s on Whatsapp (with a fee outliers on Signal or Facebook messenger). I think it’s still used in the US because it integrates well with SMS, which most people don’t use much either in Europe.
I use iMessage or SMS in Scotland to communicate with people from her and mainland Europe. iMessage works for everyone, ether they get a SMS or they get a iMessage. I don't have to think if they are also on Discord or Skype. I don't know a soul that using WhatsApp or Signal. I did at one point know people that used Facebook messenger, but only when it was integrated into the mobile app and website, as soon as it became its own thing those people moved off to Discord.

iMessage works so well because you just send a message to the persons phone number and it gets there regardless of what phone they have. It'll only get better when SMS over IP takes over. I and many others are not signing up for the flavour of the month messaging client, re-finding all our contacts, and then having yet another thing beeping for attention.

that's the whole point: people use Windows because people use Windows. People use Whatsapp because people use Whatsapp.
Why not take it from another point of view: IF you really like to stay in contact with me, well, then the only option will be Signal.
Don't want to download it, because you don't know it or the like? Well, in that case you are not a person I really find that interesting anyway. Bye.

Just have a look at your connections in Whatsapp (in case you are still using it): how many of these connections are really important to you?

All the people in my WhatsApp chats are important to me. For those few friends that don’t have WhatsApp, I’ll fall back and use regular SMS with them as it’s universally available no matter the platform. Not gonna download another messaging app just for one person 🤷

Thankfully everyone I talk to regularly uses Telegram now.

Facebook is what you read when you look up Spyware in a dictionary.

The common response is that “our conversations are not worthy of E2E encryption”. What do you say to that?

I say I do care.
Since communication is involving at least two persons, my choice should be be as valid as the others.
It's a choice, and as long as you have one, use it right.

Yeah.....everyone needs to use the platform you want to use, because the whole world revolves about YOU, right? With such views, your Whatsapp using "friends" won't be missing much it seems.

If all you ever deal with is one-to-one text conversations then the imessage and sms combination works well for cross platform chats.

The moment you want to send a photo or video, or chat with more than one person, then carrier MMS charges will kick in for all users, unless 100% of the group are using iMessage.

Signal does the same as iMessage on Android. It will by default prefer to send to a contact via Signal protocol but falls back to SMS. Unfortunately it also suffers from the MMS charges problem.

I'm also from Europe and I pretty much haven't met anyone that uses iMessage. Even iPhone users use WhatsApp and when I have asked to chat on iMessage they usually have told me that they prefer WhatsApp.

WhatsApp was an awesome app back when I’d use it for work. It remember liking it more than Signal which I use now.

But being owned by Facebook… yeah nah.

You still have to pay for MMS?

SMS and MMS are free in Australia the only issue is MMS protocol destroys the photo/video quality so it’s all potato cam.

Given that Apple holds the encryption keys for ‌iCloud‌,
MacRumors, this is not true in general. They hold the encryption keys to iCloud backup, and via that to some of the other containers. But not, for instance, to the key ring with web passwords etc. An app can also store data in their own encrypted containers (without Apple access), without using their own crypto like in this case.

They will tease me about what I'm up to, and call me paranoid. 😂

that's not what I am saying, and no, of course the world does not revolve around me.
One could also wonder how important these apps are. If you want to discuss really important matters, then why not use plain old email, or simply use a phone call.
I don't have Whatsapp friends, since I do not use Whatsapp any longer.
And to be honest, one doesn't miss much.
It 's like in the old days when internet went down for some time: suddenly you had an ocean of time.

Hardcore smackdown to iMessage. Can’t believe Facebook/Whatsapp is now more secure than Apple/iMessage.

Well deserved. Apples “privacy first” stance is nothing but a marketing story.

My dealer only uses WhatsApp.

So, because his Whatsapp-using "friends" are using an app from what is arguably the most execrable data-miner on the Internet, he should, too?

With such views, your Whatsapp using "friends" won't be missing much it seems.
Maybe he doesn't much care for the company of lemmings, anyway?

I just can't believe that a company that's whole revenue stream is on a complete lack of privacy, provides a chat app service, and touts how encrypted and secure it is.

Having said that I haven't read their TOS, so I could be wrong.
