I won't sell it. Once an Ipad is released that has enough new shiny things that I'll want it, my current one will go to my husband.

When will I sell my iPad?

Lets see, wife has the current model, i might get the second. it would take a huge upgrade for her to buy a new one before hers dies, and if she did hers wouldn't be sold but go to the kids. I would be more tempted to upgrade then her but not by much, then mine would go to the kids. When the kid save enough to buy their own then we would sell the current one.... carry the 4..... current release cycle..... children getting older..... factor in getting jobs....

I would say in about 6 years if it still works. Just like my wife's iBook G4. :D

One month before release of iPad 2

Your source?
Why does he need a source? If the iPad is announced in a similar fashion then the month is irrelevant until the keynote.
With that kind of thinking they will always need to sell something to get something else.

Not really moving forward in life is it. Sometimes it's better to just enjoy what you have.

I agree though in some cases, like me, i sell to reduce the amount of unused junk I own.

I probably won't sell. My nephew has been playing it non stop since I arrived home for the holidays and I the I'm going to give it to him.

wow so many replies but alot of good info. I guess it depends on your situation, I don't need the money but its nice to get top dollar before the upgrade. I'm not in a situation where I have family in need or who would want it, and despite the heartache, I could live without it for a month or 2. Im aiming for selling before the keynote because then everyone knows and the flood begins. I might hold off until february to see what develops. For me, even though multitasking works great on the iPad, i'm dying for more RAM. I hate the constant reloads in safari, and apps like Friendly for Facebook even though they multitask will quit after opening an app or two. I know safari and games take up mass amounts of RAM, but really I think they should skip the 512 mark and go straight to 1gig ram. It would make things fantastic. Just Sayin'

I have always sold apple stuff after I have the next gen in hand. Always done well on the price.

I may be wrong, but I just feel the iPad is going to drop a bit more than some other things. Esp the iPhone which was still desperately wanted by many as a phone.

Obviously if you want "Top Dollar" I'd sell it before April at the latest.

I'd imagine quite a lot are going to appear on the 2nd hand market around that time with people doing exactly this, and the more on sale 2nd hand, the more the price will drop.

Not 100% sure if I'm selling mine or passing it on yet.

I'd really like to know what the upgrade will be.

If it's just Facetime with a front camera only, a Gyro and a tiny re-style and nothing else I won't sell.

I need at least a Rear Camera and a Speed up for me to spend money.

I'm bored with the whole "apple" thing. Nothing really exciting anymore. A tweak here, including a feature that should have been there from day one, etc.

Will probably keep hold of it, it does everything I need, not sure what the retail value would be, it has some scratches on the side from where it slipped off my bag onto concrete.

That's the apple way. User experience is at the top of the list. Framing as many features as you can in a device doesn't always mean the best experience. Look at Android. Lots of features but unless your willing to spend the time setting everything up, it's not that great and as easy to pick up as iOS.
This is where apple has always shinned. Everyone from 2-90 can pick up a iPad or iPhone and start using it, not figuring out how to get here, start this, maximize this.

Not going to sell my iPad til I get a new one anyways :) I gotta keep the unlimited date plan :p

Also, as with the iPhone situation, what I found out is that I sold my iPhone before the 4 came out for the same price (even slightly less) than after it came out - cause people won't want to pay a lot for something when a new version is about to arrive anyways. So the lesson here is just to hold off until you get your replacement. I bought my 16g 3G ipad used for $500 and it looks brand new and comes with everything. At the worse I'll lose $100 and sell it for $400. Realistic it'll end up being sold around $450.

No hurry here. The one I have now is perfectly functional. I'll probably wait to see the features of the new one before deciding....

When it breaks. I love my iPad, I'm sure the ipad 2 will be an awesome device, but I bought this ipad because I love the device, not because I needed something to tie me over until the next one.

These things aren't cheap, maybe if it is AMAZING I would consider upgrading, but not likely. Cameras, meh, my iPhone works. More ram? Well, again no biggie, I don't use 30 apps at once. An SD slot? Camera connetion kit hasn't exploded yet. Significantly higher res display? Sold. But I don't think the technology is there for that, however. The experience of not being able ti discern pixels on the iPhone 4 is incredible, 300 ppi on the ipad would make my head explode, but beyond that, from the rumors, I don't see anything significant, not enough to warrant being without this for a few months, or to spend more money on a new one, even if I sell this one.

$.02

The thing to remember for those assuming it will retain iphone value is this. AT&T customers who are eligible for an upgrade can buy an iphone 4 for $299, otherwise it's $629. The truth is, its resell value is AWFUL. My last smartphone was $99 through AT&T, but it sold on eBay for closer to it's no-contract price, upwards of $500 IIRC. If you look on eBay, you can buy a no contract iphone for pretty close to the contract price. Even then, it's easy to sell because of the t-mobile folks who are going to unlock it, or the 3GS or other phone owners who are still locked into a contract, and not up for renewal and therefore can't get the discount.

touchy subject to ask on a forum that contains 90% iPad gen 1 owners and lovers....

i see alot of chest pounding, but inside i bet alot would like to upgrade to this model if it was a close $ swap

Just ordered mine from Apple. I'll buy a screen protector and case. Keep it in mint condition. Don't mind losing around $100 six months from now to get the latest and greatest.

my buddy just sold his 3GS 16GB for $400. I sold my 3GS 32GB for $450 in June. How is resale value awful?

Sold mine a couple of weeks ago. Now getting some solid use out of my new MBA 11".

I miss my iPad like mad but I'll survive until the new one lands.

It has to be said there's a lot to come for the iPad1 in terms of new software and upgraded OSs. That said my iPhone 4 did make the iPad seem a little dated when I got it.

Yeah idk what hes talking about when it comes to resale value? Last week I sold my launch day iphone 4 on ebay for almost $750 and it was only unlocked with ultra sn0w.

I thought about selling mine about a week ago. I've only had it for a month so far.

4.2.1 seems a little bit chuggy to me (iOS 3.2 was super smooth for me) so I hope they can release an update with performance improvements. If they do that I will keep hold to the 3rd gen iPad is released.

If not I will have one eye firmly on the new iPad 2 to see what it brings to the table.

Perhaps I'm looking in the wrng places but when I was looking in to buying an iPhone a couple months ago, pre-upgrade, they weren't far off from the actual contract price. Either way, it's apple and oranges. The iPad doesn't have a nice contract discount to mask it's actual value. Selling a $600 phone for $450 isn't bad, but its actually not as good as many other phones, even though it seems like a good deal because, with your contract discount, you paid less than you got for it. With an iPad however, as is the subject here, I think you will lose even MORE than that simply because everyone pays full price, and if the second gen is at the same price point, it might be hard to justify buying a used, last-gen model for anything but significantly less than a new, current model. The other thing is, if they still have original iPads hanging around, they might get a steep discount, only reducing the resale value of a used one.
