Put an end to my misery

Hi again, I ended my misery this afternoon by ordering a new iMac. F...k the update. The hell with the wait and see. After reading all the posts here and there, I came to this conclusion: I'd have waited for the updated iMac, I'd have been anxious that a new update came in three months. That's me. This machine will take me to the stars (hope): stock 27 1999$ machine with a 1To Fusion drive. That's it. That's all. I asked Apple to throw in a goodie and they did: magic trackpad for free. So I'm a happy Apple fan boy (man). :D

Nooo!! They just announced the new iMac available on July 20th!! I keed. :)

I'm in the same boat as you were. All I want is 802.11ac because I plan on doing a lot of wireless streaming to an ATV. I've had my finger hovering over the order button several times now.

What to do what to do! I wish I could just hardware this thing and order one now!

Are you sure that the Magic Trackpad is free? Or are you getting it instead of the Mouse?

First I went for the Mouse/Trackpad combo. Then I asked him if Apple would be generous enough to throw in something. He had me wait on the line and came back with this offer: Apple is subtracting the price of the combo (69 $) from the total of the invoice. So I have the mouse (stock) and the trackpad for free. Plus, it's in plain letters on the invoice (in French):

•Processeur quadricœur Intel Core i5 à 3,2 GHz (Turbo Boost jusqu’à 3,6 GHz)
•8 Go de SDRAM DDR3 à 1 600 MHz (2 x 4 Go)
•Disque Fusion Drive de 1 To
•Processeur graphique NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX avec 1 Go de mémoire GDDR5
•Apple Magic Mouse + Magic Trackpad
•Clavier sans fil Apple (français canadien) & Guide de l'utilisateur (français)
•Trousse d'accessoires

Congrats! There's every chance that your magic mouse will just end up in a drawer somewhere and you'll use the trackpad full time. I use my razer mouse for gaming and my trackpad for everything else.

Why does your 4-wheel dirt bike need WiFi? :D

I do lots of streaming to :apple:TV, and N speeds are just fine until we get to the point of 4K content on 4K screens, which isn't happening soon. And they haven't announced a :apple:TV with 802.11ac yet either.

Uhm, 4 wheeling and NOT watching Netflix? Sounds boring... :)

I would recommend selling the Magic Mouse then. Use the money to get a decent mouse from Logitech. The trackpad is nice though.

Haswell processor, 802.11ac, PCIe SSD and updated GPUs.

Individually, none of these changes (except for possibly the SSD change) would be worth Apple updating the iMac. Taken together it is worthwhile.

Don't forget TB2. My gut is telling me Apple is going to have a computer-only event in the fall where the Pro is put on sale, and the rest of the desktop and Macbooks get updated. Heck, maybe they'll skip the event: we already know what the new Pro looks like and everything else is just getting a spec bump (unless they surprise us with a redesigned Mini).

Last year, when they said "they'll be for sale in 4-6 weeks", that was an extraordinary event with virtually no precedence in Apple's history, and they did that only because of the age of the old model, the new ones were overdue due to manufacturing issues, and they already had a room full of people to talk to about products going on sale that day so they gave them something else to ooh and ahh over.

At the risk of getting flamed, I wish they had delayed the redesign until this year, and released Ivy Bridge iMacs and Minis at last year's WWDC alongside the (then) new rMBP. That would have given them plenty of time to get the screen lamination issues solved and avoided the clunky roll-out earlier this year (especially for the 27"). Think about what a dramatic jump this would have been:

2012 iMac line:
- old (2009-2011) chassis and screen
- 802.11n
- Ivy Bridge processors
- 1st gen TB
- 500GB base HD
- Fusion Drives (as an upgrade as they are now)
- the (at that time) usual SATA 3 SSD offerings
- 4GB base RAM
- GT 6XX graphics
- USB 3

2013 iMac line:
- new (late 2012) chassis and new low glare screen
- 802.11ac
- Haswell processors (not much faster, but cooler for thin chassis)
- TB 2
- 1TB Fusion drive standard
- PCIe SSD options
- 8GB base RAM
- GT 7XX graphics
- USB 3

Just dreaming; fortunately I'm plenty happy with my 2010 21.5" w/SSD for now.

I intentionally left it off the list. My guess is that Thunderbolt 2 will not show up in any Mac besides the new Mac Pro until sometime in 2014. Initially Thunderbolt 2 chips from Intel will be in short supply.

Because there is a HUGE demand for Thunderbolt already.

I think if Apple had it to do over again, knowing what they know now about how bad the screen lamination manufacturing issues are and how short the supply would be, they would have released an interim product as early as April 2012. But I'm thrilled with the way the new model came out, and although last year was an excruciating wait, I'm much happier than I would have been with the interim model I would have inevitably purchased.

Apple store down? ;)

Yep. New iPhones today, plus the iWatch.
