One, max number of lines on the old plans is 5, I believe. Two, unless Apple changes their upgrade cycle to every 10 or 20 months, the early upgrades are somewhat meaningless to me. That just means for the 4 months I'm waiting for the new iPhone to be released, I'm needlessly paying AT&T an extra $22.50/month per line.Actually new contracts with subsidies are now back again to the 20 month full subsidy upgrade cycle again.

So it should be $450/20 months
So the subsidy is worth $22.50 a month per line.
Which means the subsidy way is CHEAPER the more lines you add!!
I have Next. Those fees don't apply to me and its cheaper than having a contract plan. Nothing but win here.
And my next upgrade is a paltry ten months away.
Please explain how next is cheaper. Att surely won't give you anything for free.
Did you miss when AT&T introduced the 10gig value plan which decoupled the phone subsidy from the plan price?
Once I switched over the cost of my plan dropped by just over $60 dollars compared to my old 6gb subsidy plan.
Even after I added the Samsung S5, it was still nearly $30 cheaper from where I was. Plus I could pay off my phone in full tomorrow and the price of the plan would once again drop down quite a bit.
Again, it depends on your old plan.Sure with more than one line it could be. For single line users it's a huge hike.
Yup, there's no activation/upgrade fee with Next. However, until you hit 10GB data or higher, Next is more expensive than the 2-year subsidized plan.Doesn't AT&T Next waive that upgrade fee altogether?
If you're gonna stay on AT&T regardless, might as well use AT&T Next.
In fairness, the same is true for cable companies, etc.Carriers are just like the airlines and always looking for a way to make more money.

Any company which doesn't live by that creed is headed straight for bankruptcy.

You really think AT&T will go down for not raising their ******** activation fee? Do you realize what your $40 is actually doing? Nothing. Some jackass sits on the phone and literally pushes a couple buttons and you're activated. They likely off-shore any potential data entry that may occur and for $40, they're getting a handful of off-shore people to do the job. The profit on activation fees is quite high and in this digital age, it is a pointless fee.

adding insult to injury anybody currently paying $15 per line for family share will find that also jumps to $40 per month for data at next upgrade

Quick question, after your upgrade, can you keep your old phone? Or do you have to trade it in?
If you are on next you have to trade it in. If you are doing the standard 2-year thing you keep it.
