Since we’re in uncharted territory when it comes to new Mac releases due to this being the first generation of Apple SoCs in Macs, supply shortages, labor shortages, and increased demand, I thought it might be interesting to see when everyone expects the next generation of the 14” and 16” MacBook Pros to be released. This would be the M2 generation of the device, assuming it gets the M2 Pro and M2 Max options.

The M1 Pro/Max 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros were released in October 2021, almost a year after the M1 was introduced. It has been some 6 months only, and the regular M2 has not even been released. If Apple keeps this timeline, I would say June 2023 as the bare minimum.

Curious to see if chip upgrades without hardware redesigns will get their own big events with Apple Silicon, or the more silent updates akin to the Intel days...Regardless, don't see it happening before Q3-4 2023, espc. with China lockdowns and chip shortages.

I think Apple will want to get to the point where they do a CPU spec bump every 12 months, just not sure if they're able to do this yet with the silicon shortages, supply chain issues etc. Maybe it will be 18 months for the M2 then drop to annual?

If the upgrade isn't coming until the back half of 2023 I would bet on 2022 seeing some kind of upgrade to the M1 models - probably a pricing adjustment so buyers get more specs for less money rather than a true upgrade.

Apple could do that by switching the 8 core CPU model of the 14 inch MBP to the 10 core M1 Pro and the 16 inch dropping the 512GB storage model and adjusting pricing downwards on the remaining two SKUs. I think that would be enough to keep the MBP relevant in the face of AMD and Intel's 2022 lineup without costing Apple much margin.
