why is June/July in last place? i voted for it...

that is when iphones are usually updated...perfect time to add a few slides on how the ipod touch is doing....

Please calm down about the camera. Goodness. If you want a camera, get and actual camera. They are built to take really really good pictures and videos.

i sort of agree with your first point. I have the iphone and rarely use the camera... whats the big deal? but i found the quality of the camera to be pretty good so i have no purpose for a standalone camera.

I have three, including the one on my cellphone... I still want one on my ipod, just because a) my cellphone cam is very slow and b) my other cameras (including a nice DSLR) are too large to bring with me everywhere :p I also usually have my iPod whenever I'm out and about.

But once again, whats the point of having a camera in the touch if it will only be capable of taking video, not still pictures like the nano?

That is true. If it just did low-res video like the Nano, I wouldn't even consider it. If it was closer to a 3GS camera, I'm down for an upgrade

When you don't have a camera ANY camera, is better than nothing.

I remember when I upgraded my first palm to one with a camera, complaining and griping about it because I thought I would rather use my regular camera.

the tune changed real quick as I carried my palm everywhere. I also found all sorts of uses for it, and a camera of some sort is a requirement, on either my phone or my pda.

Would I rather use my phone camera, to take pictures of something, no, but you would be surprised, how useful it is to have in a pinch.

I use mine to price check, take photos of company phone numbers, and of course the grandbaby.

its like carrying a pocket knife, you never miss it until You don't have it.

iPod updates are "usually" in September with a Keynote, or early in the new year (January or February). Furthermore, historically, the iPod Touch has seen updates only happening in the month of September. That is somewhat big news if you ask me...

The camera release may be early 2010, but I think they are going to wait till September 2010 for the 4th gen. I think it is all due to a business strategy because of the new Nano being released with two key features that the Touch should have - a videocamera & FM radio.

I wouldn't have imagined Apple to add a camera to an iPod, but with Android starting to show up in big numbers, and with an app store behind it that's starting to look like all iPhone/Touch developers are also developing for Android, I can't see how they could leave one off the next model if they want it to stay on top of the PMP heap. I just updated from my supposedly "iphone beating" Samsung Instinct to an HTC Hero phone. I found every app in the Android marketplace to install on it that I insist on having on my Touch. A few aren't as polished as their iPhone/Touch version is, but it's clear Android is getting serious attention from developers. The 5 megapixel camera in my Hero has zoom and auto-white balance, along with several other "camera only" features. Yes, Android is primarily a phone OS, but there will be more than a couple of 2010 PMPs showing up with it too. You can already by and Archos 5 with Android. The Creative Zii's Android should show up any time now. That Zii has two cameras with one being 720p video capable.

The 32GB 1st gen iPod touch released in February, not September.

So there is precedent for a mid cycle release. I still believe that is when we'll see the camera enabled touch. Everything else will be the same as the current 3rd gen, it will just be a 3.5gen.

The 32GB was not something you can articulate as an update, that was a new model they "needed." They added in flash memory because of supply/demand(cost) of flash memory at the time when they first developed the Touch. If you look at a lot of Apple's 1st gen models in general, you'll see some similarities about these 'easy' spec additions that make economical sense. Especially, when the market has a spec like flash memory, where flash memory can decline in price in great measure when a larger capacity has just come out to the public. (i.e. - The reason for adding the 1st gen 32GB in February, and not in the debut)

There is not precedent for a mid cycle release!!! Funny word to use, especially since it was quite easy to understand why they needed a 32GB model on the 1st gen.

This update is different. A feature like a camera/video/mic & FM radio is a drastic update from the previous generation...

I want it to come early 2010, but I think the way their sales are going - we'll see it fall of 2010...

Do the people that voted October want to change their vote after today's hardware release or do they still think an iPod Touch with camera wil be released this month ?

I am guessing that - in order to justify his last month's comment - Steve Jobs has convinced himself that iPod Touch does not need a camera after all, and probably that's the last thing on his mind these days.

Yeah those new iPods are just rolling off the shelves  Maybe this spanking is a wakeup call for Jobs to stop under-powering and under-featuring his devices to string consumers along. How about a return to quality, complete feature set and an amazing package that supplies everything - dock, cables, software - like Apple USED to do. Now you are lucky to get earbuds and even they are *****. Consumers are tired of being strung along for months and years, forced to buy something half-assed so Jobs can get his bonus.

iPods get updated once a year, with the exception of adding different colours to the nano & shuffle ranges. Im certain there will be no exception this year, there is no need to update before then because the touch is selling well.

The major updates always come before the holiday season because that's when the most sales will be. So if they added a camera before then, they would be stuck for a killer new feature next christmas.

Apple just announced record earnings. Do you think Jobs really needs a wakeup call???

You know if Apple stopped supplying their earphones with the iPods AND knocked off say $10 off the price, I would be happy because there always has been better earphones that you can get than wasting your money having to pay for that useless pack-in.

Anyway, Apple is a business, and businesses only want to make a profit. Looking at it with the most critical point of view, it's all about offering the bare minimum with the highest possible selling price. If Apple can save money not having a camera on the iPod touch, and still have good sales, then what's the point from their point of view?

guess

I would say before the holidays or on the exact date of...JAN 16 theyll do a discrete refresh similar to the imacs no event this time.

this was an old thread, huh?

I guess I voted for the right one, NEVER!

Apple announced no new hardware this year. So that ends all hopes. Well have to waite next summer.

Lol... I'd say next fall. Enjoying my 3rd gen since last month and already started saving up for the next release. :D
