Joke of the week:

"Iceland, we said 'SEND CASH!' "

Also, FlightRader24 has a neat thing where you can see that there aren't any airplanes in UK airspace (save one?).

The web site is getting hammered so it's information on individual planes isn't working but there appears to be a solitary aircraft flying just south of London, very odd.

(it's call sign is MSAIRZ for any conspiracy theorists out there)

Explained on the BBC new website. It's a research plane. Quite interesting story actually. I read it a few hours ago but I can't find the story now. Dammit I'm getting old.

I found a bit of info in a box :

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8623806.stm
A lone plane is in the skies above Britain tonight on a research mission to investigate the volcanic plume.

The aircraft - with scientists on board - is taking measurements of the height, density and position of the ash.

There are limits to what satellites and ground observations can discern about the plume.

Its flight path was planned to take it from Oxford to Prestwick to Lossiemouth to Newcastle and then back south.

Among the researchers on board are specialists in atmospheric science.

The aircraft - a Dortnier 228 - is managed by the government-funded Natural Environment Research Council. Its head of airborne research, Peter Purcell, described the plane as "extremely adaptable and capable".

"The instrumentation will allow the crew to safely monitor the atmospheric conditions as the plume is approached," he said.

The findings will be fed to Met Office to help improve forecasts for the plume's position.

Apparently parts of Scotland are experiencing ash falls, and they're expected to move southwards as the night progresses.

A chap from the Met Office says this is 'unlikely to cause any long-term health effects', but you just watch – this'll be how the zombie plague starts.

A friend on Shetland says it smells of eggs and said something about their cat and ash. I've no idea if they're having a laugh at us southerners though! The Met woman person said we should expect a thin film of the stuff over cars in the morning. Why not the ground?

MI'M meant to be taking my dad on a secret holiday to Tunisia on Saturday for his 60 th birthday. How do you tell somone that they might not get to go on the holiday they don't know they're going on.

Funny thing is my flight to the UK got delayed twice to far. First there was the British Airways strike, now a volcano erupted! Looks like I shouldn't be going there :p

I think because it's likely to be quite a fine dust and will just be more noticable on the smooth, coloured surface of cars.

Not ours though. It's bloody filthy.

Dad's stuck in London and sister has rented a car in Barcelona and will drive from there and take a boat to get into the country. Apparently some guy took a taxi + ferry from Belfast to London yesterday, cost him a cool £1000 :D

Probably put it on expenses though..

At 0830BST, the air traffic control body Nats extended its unprecedented restrictions on UK airspace until at least 0100BST on Saturday.

Guess things are going to get worse for airliners before they get better. I can only imagine the amount of problems the ash is causing.

On a side note one of my friends is stuck in Dubai:cool:

One of my daughter's teachers is stuck in South Africa. Her school starts on Monday after the Easter break - hope he can get back in time.

My partner has full time rehearsals starting on Monday too, and our babysitter (for our other daughter) is stuck in Latvia ... I'm gonna have to take time off work or something if she doesnt get back in time.

The Grauniad has an article about the icelandic eruption in 1783, with after effects contributing to the triggering of the French revolution. Resultant food shortages being the major factor so...

Will you join the riot

if there is no (organic airfreighted) fresh Peruvian asparagus in waitrose?

seriously though we may be seeing the effects of this for some time.
