I've been checking out the official Met office volcanic ash charts.

According to them, the volcano has now stopped. The charts show no more ash emanating - and the existing cloud disappearing in a southerly direction.

UK airspace is still affected at 6am tomorrow, but at the rate shown I guess we could expect UK flights to recommence late Tues. or at least during Wednesday.

this is interesting b/c the last time this volcano erupted, almost 190 years ago, it lasted ...gulp... 2 years!

and they say there is another near it which is "due" to explode.

Well, the problem isn't that it's erupting, the problem is that glacial water is getting down into the crater and causing rock to fissure explosively - and that's creating all the ash.

So it may well settle down into a more steady-state eruption, which doesn't involve throwing hundreds of tons of junk into the atmosphere.
