3G has to me been the issue with battery life..having 3G on all the time means it is always searching for a connection and which uses up battery. That has been clear when at work.

This explains a lot. In my bunker...er, office it is constantly looking for a signal.

Orange UK
The last time someone said they were able to turn off 3G on the 4S--prior to iOS 5.1--they were mistaken or misunderstood the the situation (e.g., asserted that EDGE was still present--and it was, you just couldn't force the 4S to use it).

Apple has said that the 4S did not have that option at all.

Finally, there have been Orange UK iPhone owners who contradict what you asserted--right from the release of the 4S.

So how did you get the one 4S that did what nobody else's did?

Maybe I misunderstood then, I saw the image on post 28 showing a switch for cellular data an no option for 3G.

Heres what mine has

Again, prior to iOS 5.1 the Enable 3G toggle was not present on any iPhone 4S's, regardless of carrier. The iPhone 4 always had that option--if the carrier allowed it.

Now the iPhone 4S has that option too (if the carrier allows it).

But you asserted your 4S has always had that option. Yet Apple said the 4S didn't have that option (prior to 5.1). Even others on Orange in the UK, with iPhone 4S's, reported they didn't have the option (and some were not happy about it).
