I have never owned an iPad before, and I plan to when the iPad 2 is released. What are the first things I should get when I purchase the device?

Apps, cases, stands, docks...etc..

Apps? Yes. App store is pretty well organized, so it should help you.

Cases? Yes. Get something.

Stands or docks= No for me because apple always change the form factor on these iOS devices. I don't buy docks.

If you don't know what to do then seriously consider waiting (i.e, doing nothing). Explore other things outside of the Apple system and diversify your experience. You already have plenty of Apple stuff.

Not a problem, use a Droid X daily, dabbled deeply into android, and also had an iPod Touch before getting a smartphone. Even tried some BB experience. But I know waiting for it, only makes the wait longer....

I would think screen protector has to be number one thing you should be getting along w/ a case(although lot of people use it without them).

Everything else after that is personal choice and preference.

Tell you what...how about getting some thing that YOU want, and not what others tell you?

IMO, you don't need a case or a screen protector unless you are clumsy (or just hate to be different). If you really are struggling to decide what to do, maybe you don't need an iPad in the first place?

A screen protector is a safe bet. Is it needed? Maybe not, but its like insurance. You wished you had it when something goes wrong. Stuff happens and there's no reason to make sure your expensive device is not protected ;)

So is it best to wait for the iPad 2? Is there a release date scheduled? And it is going to be that much better than the current iPad?

I am thinking of buying one for my wife but I am contemplating whether I should buy the current iPad or wait for the iPad2.

This has been discussed in many other threads but I'll answer you here. The next iPad is rumored to be thinner and lighter, with more ram and a faster processor (possibly dual core), and a front and rear camera for FaceTime. Release is rumored for late march or early April, but who knows for sure. I was going to wait for iPad 2, but changed my mind and bought mine in January. I've used it every day for school work and am completely happy with my purchase. If you have a need for one now, then get one.

I got the first version on day 1 with the Apple case and I love it.

I use it every day and I'm sure the case has saved it from any damage on a couple of times when I dropped it.

I will almost certainly buy the next one and again with an apple case.

Go for it!

I plan on doing exactly that. However a few suggestions won't hurt.

A screen protector, I dont think I'll need one, dont like the feel of it anyway.

Never saw the need for a screen protector.

I clean it with a micro fibre cloth every day, a few seconds at most and it's pristine. However, it's mostly only used at home so no real chance to get scratched.

I've never had any damage to the screens of my many ipod touches or nanos so i guess I am just extra careful with all my Apple products. Makes for good prices on ebay when I sell them on!

Well I've never had an iPad but I have an iPhone. I recommend a case and screen protector. I have a static cling protector on my iP4 screen and I love it. I think it actually makes my experience with the touch screen better but that personal preference. A case is great as well, especially if you want to sell the thing later. Get one that works for you and does what you want it to do (ie if you don't need a leather case with pen holders and the flip out crap... don't buy that. look around).

Docks - don't buy nothing until it's released. As mentioned, form factor could change.

RE the purchase of the iPad at all. Don't just buy it because you can, look around. I just brought a MBP and decided it was best for me based on what I need. If I wasn't doing audio/video/graphic work I probably would have just got a PC tbh.

There are many tablets around atm and I think a lot are better than iPad 1 for sure. I guess we just have to wait to see what iP2 brings. As far as I'm concerned, unless it has something revolutionary, I'm likely to consider alternatives.

If you can wait a few months, hold off and do nothing. If you need something right now, consider some alternatives.

Lmao, I'm right where you are.

I got 30 iPad apps, and 28 Apps for iPhone/iPod/iPad, but still no iPad yet, lol.

I've been wanting this for over a year, and I even started my iPad Fund. Saving $50 from every pay check until my birthday in July when I get it. :D

I've been waiting since August, patiently saving for March. I knew iPad 2 would at least have a camera for Facetime and by the time I'd have the $ it was worth the wait. I think I've pre-downloaded somewhere around 50 apps so far. Even bought a few I had used on other people's iPads. Mostly games like Angry Birds and Pocket God.

I also got a keyboard case from Zagg - http://www.zagg.com/accessories/zaggmate-ipad-case i'm within the return period if the iPad 2 isn't the same size, but I figured this would be a great case option and allow me to go with the nude back. I've never liked cases on the backs of my iDevices.
