the ipod touch 5g is already out.

i am sorry to say, but i think the ipod is done. if the "update" to the 4g was another color and a new number, then i am thinking the next "update" will probably be the iphone 5, which will come in a 4G and wifi version.

The opinion of an Apple store guy I spoke to recently about an updated touch was that there won't be one!
He will have no inside info but I tend to agree with him.
All we can do is wait and see next year, but don't hold your breath.
In the meantime I will 'invest' in a 4s and put my touch on ebay.

Apple store people know nothing about what is coming; they are there to sell what's on the floor.

they said that in their post. i think the point was that someone who is deeply familiar with apple's products has this opinion, and the poster agreed.

i seem to have gathered some negative votes for my earlier comment that we are already seeing the 5g on the store shelves (isn't this a fact?), and the lack of any significant upgrade beyond the color (isn't this a fact?) suggests that we won't see anymore ipod touches (isn't this the general trend of news reports showing declining sales?).

wouldn't it make sense to merge the ipod into the iphone (this is pure speculation on my part, but i don't think it is terribly off base, even if i prefer not to see it happen)?

No, we are not seeing the 5G iPod Touch. It is simply the 4G with a new color. The internals haven't changed. The external housing hasn't changed except for color.

...maybe after the iPad and iPhone have their next upgrade cycles, we'll see an updated iPod Touch = :apple: wants to differ the models more then they currently were...

Maybe. But it's still kinda odd that they would call the touch a gaming system and then have it lag behind in terms of graphical performance.

if the "update" to the 4g was another color and a new number,

the iPod Touch is still at 4G. There has been no number change. There has been no internal electronics change. The only change that happend this fall was that you can now get it in white.

I think that's where the negative comments were coming from?

I kinda wish that we would see an update to the iPodTouch next year. I just purchased my first one back after the announcement, so I was not quite as bothered by the lack of update as others who have been waiting, but I was still very disappointed that the iPodTouch is so far behind the iPhone 4S in technology.

It might make business sense to Apple, but it is frustrating for those of us who do not need a cell phone integrated. I use a cheap pay-as-you go and am lucky if I use even 100 minutes in 3 months. I always have tons of extra minutes when it's time to buy more time. But, it's far cheaper than an AT&T or Verizon contract plan. Wow. Those plans are budget-busting.

yay! -5 on my post. well, you are right. it is a 4g on apple's site. various sites on the internet have been calling it a 5g. my bad.

still, my original post remains valid, i think. i doubt we will see another ipod touch, unless it is merged somehow with the phone.

i don't want to see anything like that, but it has been more than a year since the last update (despite the misleading buyer's guide), ipod sales have been plummeting, and apple has given no indication that they intend to invest more in the device (where are the rumors?).

i have a bad feeling that i am going to be stuck with this crappy camera for a long, long time :(

Your post isn't rated -5 because of the 5G/4G mix-up. It's because you believe that there will NOT be an updated iPod Touch. (My previous post is -3 for that reason)

iPod Touch fans don't want to hear that the current iPod Touch is perhaps the last one. I have a 64GB 4G Touch and I appreciate everything about it, but wish that the camera was a little bit better. It didn't need to be iPhone 4 quality, but SOMETHING in the megapixel range and higher quality sensor would be appreciated.

I have a CookieCase Premium case for it which adds the general appearance and (more importantly) button-functionality of an iPhone 4. It's pretty much perfect.

That doesn't make any sense. The iPhone already has everything the iPod touch has and more. The iPod touch is for people who don't want a phone. Or already have one and don't wish to replace it.

The wave of the standalone media player is coming to an end. It is a cyclical thing. Specialized devices (cell phone, PDA, digicam, music player) give way to converged devices, then the pendulum swings the other way back to specialized devices.

The iPod Touch has run its course, having morphed into the next generation of PDA. Out-of-the-box, music playback is NOT the primary function. It is only because of available 3rd party iOS apps that the Touch remains an excellent media player... but that is in spite of Apple's actions.

Apple's strategy has been working, and continues to work. Since there wasn't an upgrade to the iPod Touch, many more people are flocking to the iPhone 4S, or even buying used iPhone 4's off-contract to use as a "next gen Touch".

While I agree that the days of the iPod are numbered, there are still children to sell the iPod Touch too and adults who do not want data plans. My guess is that the true iPod Touch 5G will come out, when Apple transitions the iPad and the iPhone to the A6 and then the iPod Touch will get the remaining A5 processor stock. Obviously this is purely conjecture on my part, but my guess is that the A5 is being made as quickly as possible and there isn't "bandwidth" to make A5's for the iPod Touch. The iPod Touch will become an "also-ran" of the iOS family though. Updates will be slower and will not have the latest and greatest like it's "bigger" brothers the iPhone and iPad.

exactly, I am not willing to spend $600USD on iPhone or sign up for $90 a month 2 year contract. iPod touch and mfi is the perfect solution for me. not only I don't need contract but also comes much cheaper and has virtually unlimited minutes. I only wish that the next generation iPod touch also has a GPS and 3G - that way I woudnt have to carry 3 devices but 1. iPod touch should have gotten 3G in the very beginning and it should have been marketed as cheap iPhone or non contract iPhone.

I think that they just wanted the iPhone to stay ahead of the iPod Touch because it does make most of the money. I asked a guy at the Apple Store about it and that is what he said. I know he probably doesn't know anything about the iPod Touch 5G or any of the other up and coming products but he does give a valid point.

When a 5" iPad Nano is produced, then you'll understand the reason for the lack of a new iPod Touch. ;)

iPod Touch 5g release date

I know people don´t have an exact date but.. when should it be around what month..? The Ipad 2 is coming february1st but I don´t think the Ipod touch 5G is coming out then because the Ipod toucg 4G was just realesed does anyone have in month..? prediction...?
I thinks it will be release in WWDC june 2012, what do you think keeping in mind the current situation ???

I think the iPod touch is done for now, until Apple can think of something brilliant to do with it. Ever since they released the white iPod touch, it shows that there isn't much else to customize and improve on this.

The only thing they can do? Make it faster.

Hi, check out this helpful video @ 23:00min

They talk about iPad rumors back in aug.2010 that are still lingering Mar.2012.

Ya, i still have a 4G since Christmas 2010, great device for on the go.
No way in hell I'm switching my krzr @ $32/month to a iPhone 4S for $78/month.
