Well now that I have a phone reserved (see my previous post above), I plan to get in line at 730am for my 8am reservation. Hopefully they'll be able to switch my silver 7+ 256GB to matte black.

Woah. how did you reserve one? I was unable to do so. And I read somewhere that Apple will resume reserve and pickup from 17th!

They will have some stock. It really depends on your area. Here, in Central Florida, lines at the Apple Stores (the ones where people are allowed to line-up) start about 8-10 PM the night before. By midnight, there's usually a hundred people, or so. By store opening, many hundreds.

If I were you, I'd shoot for 10PM.
I can't understand why so many people do this when they can pre-order online and have it delivered to them or reserve it and pick it up in store at a convenient time. I guess there are some that couldn't get what they want during the pre order so want to try their luck on launch day but I get there are many who don't even bother to pre-order. Maybe it's some kind of social experience but I'd rather be at home in bed sleeping during the night rather than standing up in the cold. Or trying not to use the toilet because I don't want to loose my place in line.

If you are not already reading this whilst in line then it's too late. Just wait for the 7s instead.

This is just how reserves work for the other 364 days a year. They don't force you to uy one configuration when there is something else in stock.

If this works anything like previous launches I have been, a few hours before they open they will hand out cards. Once a specific version of the phone is spoken for. It is considered out of stock for the day. Those who preordered one do no get preference over the folks standing in line.

The good news is you can pick it up a any time that day. I'd just go in the afternoon.
This post is full of all sorts of errors..

1) if you arrive at your designated reservation time you are promised the phone you reserved
2) you have to show up within 30mins of your reservation time... you don't have all day to simply "drop by" ... otherwise why bother demanding people pick a time slot

If we have a reservation, do we need to get there super early? Or do lines for reservations move pretty quickly?
Lines move the same speed. Since all you do inside the store is just swiping your card. Same for reservations or not.

However you don't need to be there when the store opens, since your phone is reserved for you. Hence 'reservation' right?

I reserved for in store pickup 2 years ago for the 6+ and I still waited 1.5 hours when I got there!
I remember waiting 30+ minutes at ups center for pickup....

I would recommend Thursday morning if the Apple store is a standalone (not in a mall). If it's in a mall, you'll only be able to start lining up once the actual mall doors open (unless the Apple store hires security for overnight in the mall).
Sometimes there's a line in the parking lot, or on the street. Sidewalks of course

This.

I actually waited 2.5 hours, there was about 3 walk-ins to every 1 reservation taken in the store. The reservation line was not very happy either because the Apple Store staff was being very rude about it, I'm glad I just got it shipped this year because it's so much easier and you don't have to deal with the clueless staff that somehow always runs into a problem.

Yeah, camping already. He said one other guy is there already too.

I didn't say you didn't get the phone you reserved. That's exactly what the point of a reservation is. If you read the OP, he was able to reserve a phone bit not the color he wanted. Everything I mentioned was to point out that the fact he reserved a silver phone doesn't mean he can simply change that to a black phone when he gets to the store unless there are black non reserved phones left.

They have you pick a time slot in order to try and alleviate all reservations showing up st the same time. You can both get the phone before and after your reservation, so long as you've been through any respective lines. All that matters is the date. If that specific store is handing out cards (as they do here in New England) it is functionally the same as an in store reservation made online. If no cards, they will have you wait in line (assuming there is one) and you go by what's available (though any and all reservation are held for the day).

If you don't believe me you are welcome to call Apple and ask. Your phone (or whatever you preodered) will be held for you all day.

If you stand in line please take pictures of the scalpers and the angry people . I really want to have a good laugh. ;)

At-home reservation is the best. As someone who worked the launch last year, the instruction we were given were very ambiguous. Most of us tried to make the best of it, but it was a rough launch. Happy to not still be there this year.
