this is a good idea. unable to control music quickly when my touch is in my pocket is the only thing i dislike about my touch

Yea but then you would lose the ability to double click the home button and have the music controls come up even when the touch is in locked mode....

If the screen is off then it changes to play/pause for click or double click home button. If you're in safari or something double click home still goes to the music controls.

I would presume you can toggle the functionality in a settings menu anyway, like if you want to use the double space inserts a full stop shortcut or not.

I was thinking that they should just have a user defined third click after you double click, like setting it to play/pause or next track.

I know it would give you less control than the method described by Zeromus, but I think it would work well in line with how the touch works already.

Honestly, I dont care how they make it happen, as long as they make it happen.

Any ideas on if any of these methods could make the home button more mushy(only word that came to mind) feeling over time?

This is an excellent idea.

But instead of going to Apple about this, someone should make a third-party app that does this. Apple just might do this in a long time away from now, when we could have someone create an app in a fraction of that time.

So anyone who knows how to write code or whatever and has some time on their hands, you would be doing us a huge favor!

Off the top of my head I can't think of any app that uses the home key for anything but returning to the springboard. Have 3rd party app writers found access to changing the functionality of the home key? Maybe it's an Apple-only-hands-off thing.

...but if not, i'll happily donate money/my first born to anyone who can write an app to do this :)

I'll probably get banned for dragging this thread back to life every few weeks, but I think it's worth the chance.

Has anyone heard if any homebrew have utilized the home button? If someone else can work out how to hijack the button then implementing this idea is very possible, else it may only be possible for Apple to do it themselves.

This is definitely a good idea. You know what else would be a good idea... is zooming that actually magnifies, not blurs.

But seriously, I came up with a great idea. I found out you can delete videos on your ipod touch by swiping your finger across the selected video box. When you swipe, a delete button appears.

This is a grand feature. i don't know anyone has already thought of this, but what about swiping text to delete, or swiping to copy. Think about it, a transparent red box and blue box. Red being delete, and blue being copy. To paste, you would swipe where you want your text, and a purple paste box would show up to press if you want to paste the text there or not.

That seems like a stretch but still... its good to think.

This was the one annoyance I had with the touch, especially since I cant even use my radio remote with it but that solution is excellent. Just one problem, 2 touches while locked currently brings up audio controls which I also like :(
