Yep I also could be wrong and the better screen is the less brighter one with better colors... but thats not very probable... the better screen should be the brightest with the best colors... the brighter the screen the more real life the colors normally.

I'll have to do some searching.. but when I was researching to buy my 17 MBP I was debating to go Glossy or Matte. I ran across a few threads and in it two professional photographers debated the topic. Both were stated for the best color reproduction they never used "full" brightness as it washed out the photo's and were not realistic.

I get you prefer a "bright" screen, but I don't think your going to find Apple recalling displays based on customer preference. I also don't believe you will ever be happy because if you find a "brighter" 17" that is "brighter" than your 15" then you will complain your getting shafted on the smaller one... and the circle of "omg Apple's screwing me" continues. :)

Not saying your wrong as everyone has their opinion and preferences but in the end I think your looking at likely two different manufactured screens running on two different power sources... they likely will never match exact.

Anyone can see that the image as seen on the 17" is far, far preferable to the washed out one on the 15". All the photo proves is that you prefer anaemic-looking goldfish to healthy, colorful ones.

The 15" doesnt look washed out to me. It shows more details and it actually shines and glows more vibrantly. Like take a look at the green bubbles, see how it glows more vibrantly with the whites surrounding the bubbles. And the fish looks brighter orange than the darker orange due to the dim backlighting on the 17".

All I can say is that the 15" mbp looks alot closer to my 24" LED ACD with that background as to the 17".

Not to mention if you just dim down 2-3 more notches on the 15" mbp then it will look like the 17 inch's dim screen.

I find it very funny how people are trying to find ways due to compare how the 17 inch's screen is that much better.. I would too if I dropped 3.5k for one.

From what Ive heard a reinstallation of OSX from the disc takes care of the dimming problem.....

If I were on the market for the 17" unibody mbp, I wouldnt mind the slight dim screen. I'm sure it is still vibrant when using it especially at night.

All in all, I wont give in for the 17" hi resolution screen because basically your paying almost 1k more as to the 15" mbp for a bigger crappy TN panel.

But one thing I DO like about the 17" is the ability to put in 8gb of RAM.

Personally, I don't think that anything is wrong with the brightness on the 17" macbook, it just appears to be more accurately colored. While it is not as bright as the 15" perched next to it, maybe there is no 17" macbook pro that exists that has the same brightness. Maybe in the picture you saw where the brightness was equivalent, the brightness level on the 15" may have been altered to a lower level. Lastly, maybe the brightness of the panel on the 17" is constricted by the new battery. It is possible the battery can't output a high enough current and/or voltage? Or maybe that isn't it at all but rather that the chip that controls the battery power and usage restricts the brightness. If you plug in the 17" does it get brighter? then compare to the 15". I dunno, but really, does it even matter? Nothing is wrong with the hardware. Also, the brightness of the Apple LED's are controlled by the software, so it could theoretically be fixed by a software update.
