Seriously, nobody knows. I doubt it's January because people have just spent their money on Christmas, so there aren't so many buyers for new one.

February looks very likely. For the last two Macworlds, Apple has announced notebooks. MWSF 08 MacBook Air, MWSF 09 17" Unibody MacBook Pro. But neither shipped until February.
My guess will be CES. Though I have heard stories that Apple will be there playing a large role, and then a story saying Apple will be there but not have such a big role.

Those "stories" are taken out of someone's hindquarters.
While it's very possible that Apple will attend CES in the future, or maybe even do a keynote and booths, doing so the year after leaving MWSF in a huff would make them look ridiculous, and Macworld look like the cuckolded husband.

I can't see why Apple would pull out of a conference where they were the only star but felt pressured to come up with big product announcements every year, just to announce a major product at another conference where they have to compete with other big companies for media attention.
I personally think they like their own schedule, no MWSF, no CES, because Apple still gets front page news even when they release something, like they did a couple of weeks ago.
