If I may interject into the discussion of Touch ID being superior to Face ID, or vice versa, I will say that my fingerprints are so worn out that my iPad almost never recognizes them and I have to enter a code when starting them. On the other hand, my iPhone has Face ID and I almost never have to enter a code. So it seems that my face is doing better than my fingers and that is why I am in favor of Face ID.
Ask the manufacturer to service your fingerprints 😅😉

If the rumors about the 16E are true, the price will be 50 to 70$ higher than that IMHO
So the next SE (16E?) is supposed to be the same as the 14 but with updated internals.

Hard to see how Apple could keep selling the 14 for $599 when the SE is that much better.

Seems like the 14 will have to be discontinued at least for their product line to make any sense.

That, or the SE will replace the 14 at $599. But then Apple is left without a low-price option.

I know that Touch ID doesn't work (or at least work well) for some people. But I know that Face ID doesn't work for some other people. So I will reiterate my idea that I'm not sure either one is a clearly superior technology to the other.

Actually... everybody has been working under the assumption that the 16E and the next SE are the same thing.

What if they're actually separate products?

Maybe Apple won't be updating the SE, they will keep selling the current SE for $430 or whatever.

And the 16E will replace the 14 at its current price point of $599.

That makes as least as much sense as claiming "the next SE will be renamed to the 16E" or whatever.

Well, it seems quite strange. IPhone SE cannot be sold in EU, so that’s not going to happen IMHO. iPhone SE also is quite long in the tooth in 2025 (64 Gb of storage … 😩)

Yeah that's true. Maybe they will update the port (and presumably do a refresh of the internals again) for the SE just so they can keep selling it.

Selling the 16E at $599, the 15 at $699, and 16 for $799 doesn't make a lot of sense for the product line either. The 15 is more expensive but it has a smaller number? Hmm. (Edit: and less capable. The 15 can't run Apple AI but the cheaper 16E can? Hmm.)

Maybe they will discontinue the 14 and the 15 and just sell the 16E and 16. Didn't they do something like that with the iPhone XR?

Wear an Apple Watch Ultra in black. Leave your phone at home. Problem solved if you take a few days to set up the watch correctly for the first time. No watch too big compared to the phablets you see everywhere, which everyone else calls phones. 👍🏻

Why would anyone want to strap a tiny, useless computer to their wrist as a compromise for a huge phone, when they could have a regular sized phone in their pocket instead?

The 14 has already been discontinued in some countries. The 15 will be discontinued in September as usual.

I'm on your side here, i.e., team small-phone.

But don't quite understand the consternation.

If you want a phone the size of a 2022 SE, then can't you just buy a 2022 SE? It's not a bad option. Doesn't Apple have a policy of supporting their hardware and software for at least 5 years after a model has been officially on sale? So you can get an iPhone SE right now, have your small phone, and it will still be able to run the latest iOS and still be able to be repaired by the OEM for the next 5 years. Problem solved?

Sure but if the 16E comes out in March and is better and cheaper than the 15 that will be on sale until September... hmm.

They stopped selling iPhone SE in the EU…

The term no longer exists because they eliminated the small phones and all you can buy are phablets with different names.
Unclear what you mean by "small phones."

The original 2007 iPhone with its 3.5 inch screen was considered enormous compared to the small flip phones most people had at the time.

I would consider a phone with a 4-5.4” screen a small phone.

Going by screen size is not a great way to do this. The iPhone SE has a 4.7 inch screen and the iPhone 16 has a 6.1 inch screen. Does that mean the iPhone 16 is 30% bigger? No.

The iPhone 16 is 9.2 millimeters taller than the SE (6%) and 4.3 millimeters wider (6%).

We're really splitting hairs here when 6% is the difference between a "small phone" and a "phablet."

Sorry. I see that it's still on sale in England. (Brexit.) Maybe you can go on a shopping holiday.

Right now I'm still satisfied from my OG SE, but it's only a matter of time before I have to upgrade it. And there is no normal sized phone to upgrade to.

The screen size does matter because with the correct SE3 I can use it with one hand, while the iP 16 I can’t.

The difference between one-handed and two-handed use for you is 4.3 millimeters?

Edit: Oh wait. You mean you can reach the corners of the screen because the screen doesn't take up the entire front face of the phone. Got it. So you don't really want a small phone. You want a small screen. Interesting.

I don’t think there’s a definitive answer. It definitely seems to vary with each individual. For me, I find touch ID to be much more reliable. Face ID has gotten a lot better, but it’s still not as good as touch ID for myself. But I have observed that the situation is reversed for most other people. Moving to Face ID appears to be the best solution for the vast majority of people. Even though it’s not the best solution for me.

It’s just one of those things I’ve learned to live with something that’s not optimal for me. But works better for most other people.

I suspect both the current iPhone 14 and the SE3 will be discontinued when the new SE4/16E/SE2025 is released.

Very hard to believe the SE will be supported OTHER 5 years. It is a model from 2022 and wasn’t top notch even when released.

We don’t know the price nor the specs of the 16E. Are you sure it will be better than 15 ? Maybe the 15 will be retired immediately .

How can people desire a small screen in 2025 is beyond me, but the market already demonstrated most of the customers don’t want something like that (see iPhone Mini prematurely discontinued)

Actually, it was. It has an A15. The A16 wasn't released until later in 2022.

There is general consensus that the 16E will be able to run Apple Intelligence, which means that it must be higher-spec than the 15, which can't.

It is not only the SoC that define a smartphone. Having a better SoC doesn’t mean it is a better smartphone. The SE never was.
