It is not only the SoC that define a smartphone. Having a better SoC doesn’t mean it is a better smartphone. The SE never was.
Well, we can argue about that, but it's a different debate.

Whether or not the phone is supported with iOS updates until year 20xx is going to mostly depend on the SoC, which was top-notch for most of 2022.

Yes, that’s definitely true. I was arguing about the fact that 16E will be better than 15… hard to say without knowing it.

There are many times when I want to unlock my phone and my face is not directly in front of it. I keep my phone on my desk while I'm working and when I get a notification, I will often unlock my phone with my finger and look at it from a steep angle to see if anything needs my attention. I can't imagine that Face ID would work in this situation. Having to pick up my phone to do the same sounds SUPER annoying.

Also, the phone holder in my car works fine but doesn't point the phone at my face. There are times when I want to unlock my phone while I'm driving (or stopped, anyway) without taking it out of the holder. I can't imagine Face ID would work in those cases either, I'll have to take my phone out of the holder and point it at my face in order to do anything with it. Not looking forward to that, either.

My point is, I don't think Face ID is obviously better than Touch ID, so comparing it to a no-brainer advance in technology is not the right way to think about it.
OMG, if it’s too hard to pick up your phone (and you don’t have an Apple Watch) get a charging stand for your desk that points to your face. If turning your head to look at it also too much I think that Face ID is not really the problem. As for the car, leave the ******* phone alone! 😉

Why would anyone want to strap a tiny, useless computer to their wrist as a compromise for a huge phone, when they could have a regular sized phone in their pocket instead?
Useless? Wow. There are so many things the Apple Watch does faster & easier than pulling your iPhone in & out of your pocket all day. With a glance you can check on texts, who’s phoning you, alarms that go off when & why. Set alarms, send texts, make phone calls, pay with Apple Pay, listen to podcasts or music with headphones, use Find My if you misplaced your iPhone, check on the location of someone you love and so much more… I can easily leave my house without my phone and do everything I’d normally do, can you?

Oh, okay. Well, if we figure that the 16E will have a newer SoC and more RAM than the 15, the 15 would need some big advantages to stay on par.

Having two cameras is one advantage, I suppose. Can't think of any other possible advantage the 15 might have, though.

Of course it's minimal effort to pick up a phone to look at it, instead of just leave it on a desk or table and use it from an angle.

Then again, it's also minimal effort to enter a PIN, and for some reason people don't want to do that 100 times a day either...

Possibly still having the well proven Qualcomm modem instead of being a guinea beta tester for the 1st generation Apple modem.
Yeah, that would be a little worrying to me except that we're talking about Apple. I can't think of any piece of silicon that they've made that they didn't absolutely nail first attempt.

Nothing on your list is so important that it required having an Apple Watch.

It's funny that people demand huge phones but then they need accessory, i.e. small smart watch on their wrist, because it’s more convenient for everyday use.

It’s clear you have no idea how much better they are together rather than just having your iPhone. But you do you. If you’re happy, good. My reply was more geared towards the “everything’s a phablet these days” individual, in search of something smaller…😉

A small screen attached to your wrist is not a substitute for a smaller phone.

We just don’t know. According to rumors 16E will be better or equal in every aspect so… if that’s the case, iPhone 15 will be discontinued OR it will be discounted even more (an in that case, iPhone 16E will be placed at a much higher price we are thinking). Considering iPhone 15 price, I cannot believe Apple is going to introduce such a better iPhone 16E at $499…
We are still speaking about Tim Cook 😅

that could be a point, but I don’t really believe Apple is going to use a modem not ready.

so now I know you didn’t try extensively FaceID AND you didn’t try an Apple Watch.

I like the renaming. The phone that they are releasing is nothing like the SE line.
SE is not properly a line itself, but is a concept. A concept where the dated lines fits in a low profile phone just to be the most economical but also reliable, thanks to well proven specs.

Is like if you were comparing an iPhone 5 to a 11. Both of them doesn’t have nothing much like the other, although is the very same iPhone chronological line.

the problem with 16E is, if they don't plan to release the phone annually, the next one is 19E? which is kind of awkward?
So surely it’s not going to be 16E, instead of it will keep the SE name. I think that this time Kuo is intentionally fooling us.

Face ID is not my cup of tea after trying it few times, and I will never have a useless smartwatch. But if you think Apple Watch is a must-have accessory for your everyday use, by all means keep using it instead of lugging around your giant phone.

Or maybe in your advanced age you need a device attached to your waist 24/7 to keep track of your stats… or remind you certain things that you'd forget without it. 🤷‍♂️

Wear an Apple Watch Ultra in black. Leave your phone at home. Problem solved if you take a few days to set up the watch correctly for the first time. No watch too big compared to the phablets you see everywhere, which everyone else calls phones. 👍🏻
You really don't understand the difference between a phone and a watch?

And again you don’t even have an idea of what an Apple Watch is doing. Now I know better why you are so fixated on a prehistoric design like the iPhone SE

Will make it simple for you - I don't need this crap because it doesn't do anything special that my phone can't do.

Now, go check your watch if you still have a pulse.

At least when you were complaining about phone sizes, it wasn't completely unproductive--you made your voice heard as somebody who prefers smaller phones and is opposed to the size of phones that Apple has been trending towards. Okay.

Now you're complaining about a product that you won't buy and nobody is making you buy. I mean, I also don't need and won't buy an Apple watch but I don't go around telling people that. What is it you think you're adding here?

When someone says you should buy Apple Watch as a replacement for a smaller phone, I had to make it clear that it's not.

Ok ok enough bickering

Can we get back to the real discussion here…

How can the proposed SE and the iPhone 15 exist at the same time? The SE will have superior processing + memory because it will run Apple “Intelligence”. But it should come in at a lower price point than the iPhone 15. So what other educated guesses can we make about the new design?

- One camera
- No other buttons besides volume + lock (and these may not be mechanical any more)
- no mechanical silent switch?
- no wireless charging? (All aluminum back)
- ???

Some of these are a stretch but I’m really trying to imagine how they lower the cost + differentiate from the 15.
