When using OS4 Beta, are updates required?

A friend of mine is willing to put me on his developer list, and I am very tempted.

I did some research on stability and downgrade options etc, but I can't really find anything on the updates.

If I install OS4 Beta, will I be required to update the beta all the way? Some random guy told me the phone would lock itself down if a I neglected to update to a newer version of the beta.

So - what I am asking. Could I hypothetically install OS4 beta and not update it until actual release?

Well your developer friend can probably tell you the answer, but just in case: yes every beta (if it's like the 3.0 betas) will expire and you will, most likely, need to update your beta copy 4-6 times between now and the final release.

I've also read that people have had some difficulty going back down to 3.1 as well.

Just food for thought, while there are probably steps to down grade here in on macrumors and/or the net it may be a hassle or fraught with stress. Keep that in mind when deciding whether you want to load the beta on.

Yes that is true. Once you get OS 4 beta in there, you have to update the moment the new seed is out. Reason is, each seed is designed to expire after a certain amount of time. So if a seed expires on you, you end up getting a PSOD (Pink screen of death) until you update into the newer seed.

Once the actual release happens, same thing. You have to update, otherwise the last seed you are using will expire.

When you do get an update, do you need to do it through itunes or through downloading from the dev site?

Do you need to do a restore and reinstall all your apps, etc...or do it through an iphone update?

You can get the update from the site and alt-update through iTunes.

Yes, you do have to update to each new beta version. Each installed beta version has a "kill date" and if the new version is not installed by then ... woops. So if you start the beta, you have to commit.

I wouldn't recommend installing 4.0 beta 1. It is extremely unstable. I would wait for a beta release that is more stable. I just downgraded back to 3.1.3 last night.
