There's always tomorrow........I think Apple have updated hardware on Wednesdays. And as for the next update being something big...I wouldnt count on it, thats what people said about the Powerbooks and Powermacs as they were well overdue...and they turned out to be pretty minor, the Powermac update in particular got a VERY hostile reception here lol.

I'm getting rather disappointed with some of the updates. The Powermac update? Cmon! Almost a year to squeeze out an extra 200 MHz! The iPod update was cute, but they should have left the damned 30 GB in the middle. The eMac? Its the countdown till they pull the plug on it. The only recent Apple update that was nice was the iMac G5. Faster processors, faster bus, faster video, more features, now that was good. Cmon Apple! Your laptops are lagging behind! And its now to the point where laptops sell more than desktops, like 3-to-1.

Agreed. Apple has had a LONG time to work on iBook improvements, so I think it is only fair to expect more than a minor upgrade. If Apple releases a marginally improved iBook, epxect there to be a lot of backlash, and not only from members on this Forum!

They're coming.....July 7th

I have a strong feeling that the new iBook will come out July 7th.

http://appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1148

That link states that Apple is planning a special event, and the computer maker is already inviting the press. "...Apple is asking the media to prepare for a new product announcement on or before the first Thursday in July." "It's noted that a similar message was presented to the publication just prior the Oct., 2004 Apple music event that saw the launch of the iPod photo." MacOSRumors.com is saying that there should be a Macintosh update, too.

This article was written on Friday, June 24th. When AppleInsider wrote this article, they were guessing that new iPods and iTunes 4.9 would come on that event, but we obviously know that they're wrong on the iPods since they were really released today. However, it sounds like we'll be seeing some Mac updates, and chances are that Mac is the iBook.

If new iBooks come out July 7th, it would be great, since my sister needs an iBook for school. I am planning on getting her one for her birthday, July 8th. How convenient!

The following is just speculation from my mind:
I am expecting a speed bump, perhaps a cheaper price, and maybe Bluetooth. Also, I am expecting a doubling in RAM, and maybe a hard drive increase. That happened to the iMac in May 2005, and it's likely that they'd do that to the iBook.

Normally, new updates fall on a Tuesday or Wednesday, and a few days or sometimes weeks before the update, shipping is increased.

I really hope this will be the event that Apple updates iBooks but it could also be the time when the iPhone is released.

im waiting till July 7th, and thats it for me. please update it Apple, cause im still torn on the iBook PB decision. if there is a nice update (ill take graphics card and processor) the im definently getting the iBook. otherwise....i dont know.

If apple fails to update the ibook for education, I think they pretty much lost me as a customer. I just couldn't deal with the fact that my new ibook, that's supposed to last me four years, will be outated within days of me starting school. Seeing as apples switch to intel was somewhat sudden, and an ibook redesign would have had to have been in the pipes for some time (more than the past eight months), we could still see a major update at paris, if so, I'd buy it. But, if paris comes and they release anything but a major update at paris, or no minor update in the next few weeks, steve can take that ibook and shove it, I'm gonna get me a nice ibm t43.

Has anybody given thought to Apple quietly discontinuing the iBooks? I don't really see the need for a consumer portable now that the speeds between the Pro and Consumer lines are virtually blurred.

Ha, good one.

I *NEED* a 'Book by September, for school. I don't know about the rest of you, but introducing a product marketed to students in September is mind-blowingly stupid.

<rant>
I need an iBook that hasn't seen an update in a year like I need a kick in the head.
UPDATE THE iBOOK OR I WILL BUY A DELL OUT OF SPITE!
</rant>

There. That feels _much_ better. :)

How about it being outdated before it was even shipped to you? If a computer cant use all the features that come with OSX (Core Image) what make consumers reasonably believe it will be supported at least one or two years from now.

I'm typing this on my 1.1Ghz Athlon Compaq i bought in 2001, while its framerate is poor when playing CS Source it runs everything else very decently. Can i really expect the same from a mac that isnt even optimized for its own OS? I really want to get an Apple laptop but the value that I would get in return seems to be decreasing.

'Valued' UK customer

For what apple are spending on Cram and Jam free ipod offer
Couldn't they have put in an extra stick of ram (not even that just move the soldered ram from 256 to 512) and more video memory?

Then again in the UK we don't even get the bloody ipod.
Shame on you Apple.

Realistically though...

There is NO reason Apple would change the design of the ibook for a minor update & certainly not before a major CPU change in 11 months time.

You'll get your minor update eventually - and believe me it is going to be minor just like the powermac, powerbook & emac were & just like the ipod was today, so will the ibook & mini be in the future - forget the speculation just follow the pattern.

4 things will happen to the ibook & mini

1. small speed increase
2. update graphics from a crappy 32mb to an out of date 64mb
3. 512mb ram (256 fixed + 256 removable)
4. 10Gb of extra HD max (4200rpm probably or 5400rpm if its released on Xmas day)

Accept the inevitable - the update really isn't going to make a huge difference & you will be waiting till next June if you think Apple will suddenly pull something amazing out of the bag.

Oh go on then, if Apple are feeling extra generous they'll throw in bluetooth as standard.

Timescale - anyones guess ,probably just before school/college starts.

Seriously, Apple doesn't do special events for computers anymore. Those sort of things are for iPods and iPod related things (like the iPod Phone).

I seriously seriously doubt we'll see any new Macs until September 27th (ie after the "Student Union" promo expires). It would make very little sense for them to release them a week or so after the promo was announced. I just don't think it's in the works.

Ok, when I wrote that, I completely forgot about the Apple Phone dubbed 'iPhone.' Yes, that is true, unless if it's a giant change, but still, that doesn't really happen.

The chance of the 'iPhone' coming out that day is probably likely, although I don't see why they couldn't put an iBook update on the side.

I just don't see why they wouldn't have done the iPod and the iBook at the same time if they planned on doing the iBook right now. It really doesn't make any sense to hold it off a week especially with the rebate coming out today.

It would have made perfect sense to release a new iBook today, whether it be a major or minor revision. However, not everything with Apple makes perfect sense. Some reasons:

1. Sometimes, supplies run dry. The iMac G5 was going to be released in June 2004, although IBM didn't get busy pulling out the PowerPC 970, and the iMac G5 was announced in August 2004. That is an example, and I did not intend anything specific with IBM. I was simply showing that supplies can run dry.

2. Apple releases things in spirts. Spirts usually follow on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or sometimes Thursday, and the "spirt day" can be just another day, or on a special event, such as MacWorld. Several products are updated and/or introduced on these spirts. Why did Apple omit the iBook from today's spirt? Perhaps supplies ran dry, or Steve is just trying to make us suffer.

Realistically, the iBook is due for an update. The average iBook update comes about every 150 days according to the MacRumors.com Buyer's Guide, but this time, it's been over 250 days since an update. Also, 1.2 GHz does not look as good as it once did. Plus, some people are saying that the iBook's graphics card needs to support CoreImage, and that would make sense to have a graphics card update. And, Apple does like to update their product lines right during back to school season.

I agree with the spirts thoery, I think now that we have seen the new iPod's this is a sign the coming weeks are going to have various hardware releases for apple; Most Likely the new iBook and Motorola iTunes phone...

Well while we are talking about spirits... What are all the possible spirit days that exist from now to the middle of August? (when most college students are going back to school) Also if there is any hope remember that ipods got updated while the cram & jam promotion was active last year. From the Non click wheel to the click wheel ipod... perhaps...there is a "new hope"...

There ain't gonna be no ibook update next week. Its gonna be all about that piece of junk phone. And believe you me when I say it's gonna be junk, junk as in GM bonds junk. And that my friends, is junk.

Grrr..... this whole uncertainty thing is driving me nuts! Why can't they just have a big count down for newly designed machines like they do for OSX updates?! Sure, it would kill their sales to move the old machines, but not if they drop the prices or offer some incentive.
I agree. The uncertainty makes making an informed decision harder, and in my case means that I am seriously considering deferring my purchase until the next update - however long that is.

In my case I'm hanging out for a PB update. If Apple said "no PBs till June 2006" I'd place an order tomorrow. Given I have no idea what is in the pipeline spec-wise, or when it will be released, I'm loathe to spend $A3,500 on 15" 1.67Ghz PB. I really am not crazy at the prospect of it being replaced by a 1.8Ghz with a host of tweaks for the same or less shortly after.

Of course maybe I'm worrying about nothing, and the reality is that Apple won't update the PB until June 2006, and they'll still only speed-bump them. ;)

We're not talking about spirits, (sp-ear-itz) we're talking about spirts. (sp-er-ts) I can make a few guesses at spirt days.

Oh, one more thing. Spirts can also happen when promotional offers end. For example, a bunch of promotional offers ended on April 12, 2005, the day Apple announced that Mac OS Tiger would ship April 29th.

Some potential spirt days:
July 5-7th (Apple Media event scheduled on or before July 7th)
July 17th (.Mac Save $30 promotion ends)
July 31st-August 4th (Siggraph)
MacWorld in September (Can't find the date for that right now)
September 26th (Choose the perfect printer with your new Mac ends)

So, there are five spirts there. However, that list has so many spirt days in July that chances are one of them is wrong. I think it's safe to say that July 5-7 is accurate, and the Siggraph event also looks factual. I, for one, am not so sure about July 17th. Nontheless, there are plenty of other spirt days.

heh, my bet is that they desperately try to clear the stock of current iBook line. They have over-produced those and now try to sell them away. Problem is, that no sane person will buy a laptop which runs on same technology as PC laptops of yesteryear. So you will have to wait and wait and wait. Paris expo is my bet now.
