Update: iOS 16 is now rolling out to all eligible devices, though it may take a few minutes to show up for all users.

First announced in June at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, ‌iOS 16‌ and ‌iPadOS 16‌ are Apple's next-generation operating systems for iPhone and iPad. Developers and public beta testers have spent the past few months trying out the new versions while Apple has been refining them, and a full public release is now right around the corner...at least for iOS 16.

On ‌iPhone‌, ‌iOS 16‌ includes a completely overhauled Lock Screen with extensive personalization features and widgets. There are new Focus filters, Passkeys, Safari Shared Tab Groups, and more.

‌iPadOS 16‌ gets a Weather app for the first time, and also offers a range of "pro" features that are exclusive to ‌iPad‌ models with the M1 chip. For example, Stage Manager brings a new way to multitask with multiple overlapping windows and full external display support.

‌‌iOS 16‌ and ‌‌iPadOS 16‌‌ also share a number of new features and changes such as updates to apps like Notes, Mail, and Messages, Live Text, Visual Look Up, and Dictation Enhancements.

iOS 16 Release Date and Time

iOS 16‌‌ and ‌‌iPadOS 16‌‌ became available for registered members of Apple's developer program immediately following the WWDC keynote on June 7, and Apple released the public beta on July 11.

It has since been confirmed by Apple at its September "Far Out" media event that iOS 16 will be available on Monday, September 12. Apple's iOS releases typically happen around 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, but Apple has not announced an exact time for the iOS 16 release.

In early August, Bloomberg reported that Apple was planning to delay the launch of iPadOS 16 until October, which means the iPad software will not launch alongside the new iOS as it typically does. Apple has since confirmed that iPadOS 16 will indeed be launched sometime in October, some weeks after iOS 16.

Device Compatibility

‌iOS 16‌ is compatible with the ‌iPhone‌ 8 and newer, while ‌iPadOS 16‌ is compatible with the ‌iPad‌ (5th generation and later), iPad mini (5th generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), and all iPad Pro models.

If you are eager, install the release candidate by installing the public beta profile, then remove the beta profile afterward.

IMO, the release candidates are solid, but with some issues.

While it's possible that my iPhone is reindexing after upgrading from the last beta to RC, in my experience, the battery life has taken some hit.

watchOS 9 RC is far less stable than iOS 16 RC, with some watch faces still broken (e.g., astronomy) and even more severe battery life hit (but we do get low powered mode now). It's not unusable per say, but I think it needs a bit more time in the oven.

Not sure if I should even bother updating my 13, since Im getting the 14 on Friday, well hopefully.
Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. Maybe b/c I think it'll be nice to experience the new OS features on the latest hardware, especially having the new lock screen paired with the Always On screen on the 14 pro.

Are they back to calling it iOS and no longer splitting it into iPhoneOS and iPadOS?
>> ‌"iOS 16‌ and ‌iPadOS 16‌ are Apple's next-generation operating systems for iPhone and iPad."

iPhone OS was renamed to iOS in 2010 with iOS 4.
iPadOS was split from iOS (ok, I mean, theoretically they're different things but really they're not) for iPadOS 13 in 2019

That makes it confusing. Obviously, I have iPadOS on my iPad, but which OS do I have on my iPhone--DOS, Windows 95, OS/2, etc.? They should have kept calling it iPhoneOS.

Considering ios15, who is in the right mind upgrading to 16.0 on day 1? If I had a supported device, I would wait until 16.2 at the least. Let the FOMO people be the final beta testers.

what happened with ios15?

It will be early Tuesday morning for me. Will be nice waking up to a bevy of iOS updates which I can install prior to leaving for work. :)
