iOS 18 was released to the public earlier this month, but the first Apple Intelligence features will not be available until iOS 18.1.

Below, we outline when to expect iOS 18.1 to be released.

iOS 18.1: Apple Intelligence

Here are some of the key Apple Intelligence features in the iOS 18.1 beta so far:

  • A few Siri enhancements, including improved understanding for both follow-up requests and when you stumble over your words
  • Writing tools for rewriting, summarizing, and proofreading text
  • Notification summaries for Messages, Mail, and many other apps
  • Suggested replies in the Messages and Mail apps
  • A new "Clean Up" tool in the Photos app that can remove unwanted people or objects from photos and use generative AI to fill in the background
  • The ability to create a Memories movie in the Photos app by typing a description
  • Transcription summaries for phone call recordings
  • A new Focus mode called Reduce Interruptions that surfaces important notifications only
See our full list of Apple Intelligence features included in the iOS 18.1 beta for even more.

Apple Intelligence will gain more features and support for additional languages on a gradual basis between iOS 18.2 and iOS 18.4.

iOS 18.1: Release Timing

During its iPhone 16 event earlier this month, Apple confirmed that iOS 18.1 will be released in October, but it did not provide a specific day.

Based on the timing of previous updates, iOS 18.1 will likely be released in late October:

  • iOS 17.1: October 25, 2023
  • iOS 16.1: October 24, 2022
  • iOS 15.1: October 25, 2021
  • iOS 14.1: October 20, 2020
iOS 18.1: Compatible iPhones

iOS 18.1 supports the same iPhone models as iOS 17 does, but Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model.

I am curious on the Phone call recording and transcription. I do like my visual voicemail so far but wondering how this phone recording a conversation is recorded or stored.

Will none of the features under Apple Intelligence be available on older phones? For example, the photos "clean up" tool? I mean, I have done the same thing on iPhone X with the Snipseed app for crying out loud. I would prefer to be able to do that without a third-party app.

Gurman wrote back in July 28th he thought it was mid October. We just got the beta 5 today with still versions of Darwin, FW, Safari, Music/TV apps changing, so next weeks beta 6 needs to reflect some version being finalized or not changing for it to move to a RC.

So possibly a beta 7, that would make Monday Oct 21st as a realistic target. If it was only beta 6, RC, Public that would be Oct 14th which I think isn't affording enough time to make it better not rushed.

Really don't need anything that takes the shine off their iOS/IPadOS 18.x first point release with AI for devices that qualify.

Call recording and transcription are not AI features, only the generated call summaries are.

Another month to go?

I’m on the beta so whatever but lol that it’s taking them this long to release some of their headlining feature. At least we got the camera button though.

My best guess is an event on Tuesday, October 29th or Wednesday, October 30th. They'll show off the new Macs, new iPads, talk about how they're Apple Intelligence ready, and then announce the release of iOS/iPadOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1. They might also drop the beta for 18.2 (if they haven't already), and say that it releases in December.

Can we use call recording on Europe? If not, can we change language and region to USA to use it?and what we lose if we do this?

Apple is advertising Apple Intelligence for the iPhone 16 models yet the phones won’t have AI for a month after release. I feel incredibly stupid picking up the 16 Pro Max right now when there’s no available AI features. Apple should make it very clear there’s no AI on their devices until the end of October.

Just curious. If you knew, would you then likely have bought a new phone later when AI was available? I only ask because if that were true then what harm is there having a phone upgrade now while you wait. If you would instead buy some other brand now then I get your point.
