The MBP will probably be revised, but the MB, no chance. It's already better than the MBA in almost every respect except the weight and thickness. Any improvements in that area will take sales from the Air. In fact, that's one reason to dislike the AirBook if you don't fit in its target demographic: its existence makes substantial improvements in the regular MB line a lot less likely.

I doubt the MB and the MBP will be made thinner anytime soon. That's the MBA's thing, and both the MB and MBP are thin enough for their purposes. Making them thinner would have to sacrifice some functionality, which they won't do (thats why they made the MBA).

Multi-touch is a possibility, but I really doubt we'll see that all too soon...

Sadly I doubt any extensive updates will happen until Oct/Nov when the new chipset is released.

The only expectation at this time is going to be the 45nm processor update. I doubt any other changes will happen. Don't get me wrong I would LOVE to see a larger update... but this is a rumor site.

Take everything with a grain of salt.

What makes you say Oct/Nov?

The Montevina chupset is released in May, WWDC is in June. It would make perfect sense for Apple to release an entire updated line of computers at WWDC, all using the Montevina chipset. Which of these will feature a redesign, I'm not sure. Maybe only the Macbook because that is using the oldest design (the design is the same as the G3 iBooks).

I don't see the MBP getting a redesign because it's gorgeous as it is. It's already thinner than alot of laptops with that kind of power. The weight is a bit of an issue for me as I have weak shoulders (when carrying in a case), but it's a compromise I'm willing to take to own the sexiest looking laptop on the market.

I think the MBP will be updated in the next month to include the Penryn Processor but I'm not expecting much more of an update than this, this time round. A user removeable hard drive would be nice as I think Apple are currently the only manufacturer who don't offer this (probably due to the excessive prices of their BTO options).

The flipside of the coin however comes from the fact that the upgrade for the iTouch is not free. This is an interesting precedent for Apple, and only time will tell whether or not Apple will continue down this road. I am curious how the availability of an upgrade for iTouch users was communicated for those who are not in the know. I suppose that when devices were synced following the release of the upgrade, users were automatically taken to a page on the iTunes store announcing new features and requesting $20. Insight here is appreciated.

So if Apple is charging for that software, why not charge users for the ability to use multi-touch? From a business standpoint it seems rather lucrative.

I believe I read that the reason for the 20 dollar cost is that the iTouch is not a product with an ongoing revenue stream. The iPod has iTunes, the iPhone has subscriptions, the computers have software and hardware, etc. Jobs believes all products need an ongoing revenue stream to make it worthwhile for them to continue bringing out said updates.

The last word on Intel was they were pushing back the lineup.

Intel will produce the new 45 nm chips beginning sometime in late-2008

The Penryns are 45nm chips and are out already in the Desktop sector (just awaiting the mobile release which is rumoured to be Feb).

But I have not seen any rumours of the Montevina chipset being pushed back to late 2008

You mean I can't load something I buy from the iTunes store on an iTouch? After all, it is an iPod, no?

According to Apple's financial reports certain products are set up on a "subscription accounting model." The iTouch was not. In essence, Apple spreads out the revenues for certain products over a period of time. With the iTouch, revenues are taken as a one time entry. In order to add additional revenue, they need to charge for it. If you compare their iTouch to their computers, you pay for new software for the computer so you should pay for new software on the iTouch. If you look at the iTouch OS as an OS rather than one piece of software, you can see how charging for additional apps makes sense. They probably should have offered people who had recently bought the product a free update similar to when the upgraded to Leopard.

''I would kill for a 12/13.3 MBP... ''

if i hear this again i will not be happy. the macbook pro is a PRO machine!! why would a graphic designer or photographer want a smaller screen??? if you want a smaller screen get an air or a macbook i would hate a MBP to have a 12" screen...it would be crap!!!
*rant over*

pro user on 12" PB

As a prof videographer, i (currently) use a 12" PB since I travel to shoot video different places and a HD video camera, external drive, batteries, power adaptor with anything larger than a 12" just does let my travel case close. Now, I only capture with the PB. Almost no rendering or production.

That said, I'm getting a new Mac Pro this week and will wait up to two weeks for a MBP revision and then will pull the trigger on a 15" MBP and a larger case. The demand for production onsite is worth carrying more now.

i think the mba is going to have a big impact on mb/p updates. if they update the mb right now, they will have a computer that has a lot of capability for much cheaper than the mba. if they update the mbp, they have a computer with yet more capability for only a couple of hundred dollars more. what would be even worse is if apple wanted to potentially start making the mb/ps slimmer and to include multitouch. This would deffinitely set back the updates because, once again, they would be taking all of the light from the mba.

Oh yeah, like that "piece of crap" PowerBook 12 inch that everyone has practically given away just to get rid of such a "crap" computer?

The reason why Apple even sold a 12" PowerBook is because the iBook was underpowered back in the days. now that MacBook's performance is much closer to that of MBP's, there's not much reason for Apple to push out a Pro mini notebook computer like the 12" G4.

they must do a significant update with the macbook pro but what about macbook? people like us who can´t afford a MBP or a MBA wan´t multitouch capabilities like the MBA users; Im a patient guy i can even wait until next macworld to get a MB with multitouch thinner etc. i hope we have it earlier like u all guys said but affordability for apple does NOT mean less tecnology!:apple:

If you want a MacBook, go buy a MacBook. Plain and simple. If you want a MacBook with Multi-touch, wait till May, June or even July, b/c that is the soonest you will see it. If you also want it to be thinner, then hold your breath, b/c that won't happen for a long time till the technology of computers in general changes. The MBA is a special case, and you don't seem to get that at all. But that's ok. Out of air yet?

Well guys I guess we were all wrong, if you read this thread every sigle one of us thought it was coming on may or june and even july!! Lol!!

This is just a specs update. Nothing on the desgin, shape, etc... but I'm expecting a thinner MBP and new desgin MB in like 5-8 months.
