It's not just the airdisk that is flaky. After I sold my Linksys router to my sister and replaced it with an AEBS my air tunes became unusable. I might get ten minutes of play out of it before iTunes drops out. We listen to music with dinner each night and have several playlists by mood and even cuisine but now we have to select a CD instead. With the Linksys, I thought air tunes was the best invention, now it's completely worthless.

Oh yeah, and I also bought the thing on the premise that I could expect wireless backups. I recommend Apple networking products to no one.

IF they are actually able to release an new, basicly the same, product, TimeCapsure, then why they are not able to fix the AEBS problems? I just can't get it. What the customers who bought AEBS are supposed to do with their "not-so-working" products then?

Get it done Apple! Now. If you can't fix it, give my money back or TimeCapsule to each AEBS owner for free.

Now I don't know if this applies to your problems, probably not, but I recieved an AEBS some days ago. It came preloaded with 7.2.1 firmware and is working flawlessly. Though, as I have'nt yet received my MBP I have only used on an Ibook with Tiger installed (b/g speeds). And I have of course not used Time Machine...

BUT, I did however use the Airdisk feature to backup my girlfriends 14GB Ibook disk using Superduper and it worked flawlessly..

It also have never dropped/slowed down any connections, never lost it's connection to the Airdisk, never any problems with reconnecting after sleep etc.

So.. Maybee the have done something different with the newly manufactured AEBS's so they function as they should, maybe not, I'll run more tests as soons as my MBP gets here (should be this week)..

I bought my AEBS back in Nov when I bought my MBP....

Worst. Purchase. Ever.

It would be fine if it actually did any of the things claimed but it just doesn't, I really advise people to avoid it like the plague until a fix is released. My problems are echoed throughout mac forums across the net, same as everybody else. Can't believe Time Capsule works with USB hard drives now. I seriously wouldn't have released Time Machine now after all the AEBS hoopla, not when a bunch of angry mac nerds 'dropped' 120 GBP on the defunct devices.

Man...I have searched for this information high and low on Airport Express...and I feel like Iam seeing several answers for the questions I have.

Questions I have:

1. Will the Airport Express Extreme allow me to have a external drive so that I can share files on different computers in my home network. I know that was the intention...but does it work? I dont want to purchase a Time Capsule...I have about 5 externals already.

2. I have a macbook, and 2 pcs in the house ( mostly due to my job not allowing me to work on an apple VPN client.) I know that the specs say that I can use it with a Mac or Pc's...but does it work?

3. If #1 is affirmative, will I be able to transer the files between the PCs and the Mac?

Thanks for any help.

1. I gather you mean the Airport Extreme Base Station as opposed to the Airport Express. It will but for some of us the connection to the disks can be flaky and may cause the router itself to hangup when trying to reconnect. Hopefully a new firmware update will fix this. Currently Time Machine cannot backup to network disks apart from Time Capsule or disks served by other Macs running Leopard.

2. It does. I use it with Macs and PCs and XBoxs and Wiis and DSs and iPod Touchs and....

3. Yes as long as the disks are formatted in FAT32 both Macs and PCs can share (read and write) the disks.

Thanks...I did mean the AEBS. Is this "flakiness" pretty consistant around the board? I always wondered if it was a time machine issue or a router issue.

It does seem to be consistent with certain setups and its not confined to Time Machine. Even if I am just using the disks as file storage, it can disconnect randomly, whether I am connect via ethernet or Airport. From what people can make out here, its the firmware of the router itself that seems to be at fault. With the non-gigabit versions, people were getting better success with the previous rev of firmware (7.1.1 I think). Those of use with gigabit versions are stuck at 7.2.1 which experiences greater USB disconnection problems.

That stinks....I guess its time to convert one of my old PCs into a Linux box. Springing for a mac mini would be too much ( I know people have been using the Mini's as a server of sorts).

That's going to be my plan. When I can find an Intel mini for under $400. Media server/TM server/:apple:TV all rolled into one. I did consider the Linux box route too but I really don't want an loud, ugly box running 24/7 sitting next to my TV.

So how is the latest release 7.3.1 is fairing for everybody? I have not been using the disk much lately so I cannot say if it fixes everything or not. Anybody have tried the new release yet? Note also Apple updated the Airport software on my MacBook pro also, but I think that is for better time machine compatibility (I read it somewhere).

More feedbacks please.

I bought my AEBS 3/27, and updated to 7.3.1 over a wired connection. It works great, though it does run a bit warmer than I'd like. Read & write speeds aren't the greatest, but the airdisk mounts every time.

Edit: No connection stalls either.

I bought my AEBSn 3/28 after having returned a Time Capsule a few weeks ago due to flakiness. It came with 7.3 and I haven't updated yet, as I wanted to hear what others thought of the new release. I don't currently have an AirDisk installed, but may think of getting one of the reports are favorable.

I was one of the folks who switched back to 7.1.1 because 7.2.x was buggy with mounting the disk, and also NAT-PMP didn't work. 7.3.1 fixed NAT-PMP, and mounting was consistent, but no longer happens automatically at bootup. So overall completely usuable, just one minor annoyance.

After some futzing about trying to get it to read the 'unofficial' time machine backups I had been making, I finally gave up and just connected to my external drives directly, though. Not worth the hassle, and I was redoing my external HD setup anwyay.

Time machine backup works great! Unfortunately, nothing else has changed. Air Tunes doesn't work for long and my MBP still drops connections when on battery.

How well does the time machine 'star field' going back in time thing work, though? I had backups hacked to work on the old firmware, but couldn't get them to come back in that view.

Well, I just upgraded to Photoshop Elements 6 yesterday--2 hasn't worked since installing Leopard--and found PE2 in the time machine backups.
