iPad Pro Where are the iPad Pro reviews?

I think you are right. I wouldn't be surprised if the next iPhone and Apple TV use the M1 branding. Apple Watch M1.

I'm quite confident it's the same "M1" processor per design as what sits inside the desktop/laptop counterparts, it might be underclocked or undervolted a little, but it's the same thing. That said, the M1 itself could very well be what was going to be the A14X and Apple just decided to change directions, give it an entirely new name and then put it into their PC's.

Other have pointed out that the iPad Pro isn't getting a desktop CPU, rather, the desktops got a tablet CPU. They're fast enough now that they can power full desktop applications without degrading user experience, so why not?

This also isn't a paper launch because Apple announced the product with a finite shipping date, it wasn't announced as "available" only to be "out of stock" immediately there after.

Apple probably has hundreds of thousands of these products already boxed and ready to go. I assume they'll be flown over from China rather than boated and most peoples orders are probably already wrapped to pallets sitting in a shipping warehouse somewhere just waiting for the thumbsup for loading.

Agreed, I fully expect the M1 (well, and evolution of the name) to become the mainstay in Apple parts going forward.

I watch the reviews for 2 reasons. I want to see the comparison with the previous generation, and seeking more general information.

After purchase, I always like to see new ideas on creative ways I may find to use the product I’ve purchased that I may not know.

Recently I have stopped watching youtubers. Most of them are misleading, lying tricksters that want your click.
Those thumbnails are insane - everyone is doing the same crap over and over. Its disgusting.
MBK seems to be one of the few professional ones but he is often not that critical. I like him though.

Renne - I used to like him but recently he puts out clickbaits and his thumbnails are awful. Its like he goes to mental hospital and pantomimes patience when taking those pictures. So awful.

So, I will probably wait for MBK and then will read up a little but the times when I watched more youtube is pretty much gone. Same goes for Tesla - its just floods of crap and so little info.

I find forums or good tech sites the most valuable these days.

I was thinking this EXACT thing about Rene today. Terrible clickbait thumbnail photos where it looks like he's on the toilet, coupled with asinine titles like "WTF Leak Bombs". Huge turn off, no click for you.

This is very weird launch from Apple. Usually in the past the reviews were out few days before preorder if my memory serves me right but now, we have passed that date and there are still not reviews from anyone.
So, do we really have to wait 2 more weeks before we get any hands on info?

I think there’s a small chance that we might see a couple legit reviews at the end of this coming week, but there will be quite a few the week after. I doubt the reviews will change many minds that already pre-ordered. My guess is there will a lot of very positive reviews of the new screen on the 12.9, the speed of the M1, and some minor positives like the wide camera on the front. I still don’t understand why they didn’t add Touch ID on the power/sleep button like they did for the newest Air.

If you don’t mind me asking, what was the last thing you learned from an iPad Pro review that you didn’t know - and what channel then provided you with that insight?

They signed a NDA agreement to not say anything about it until a certain date.

You’ll see when the agreement date is reached, all YouTube reviewers will post on the exact same time.

They call it an embargo, standard industry practice and good for the reviewers as it allows them the time to properly review the product and get their written and filmed pieces sorted out ahead of time.

That's an unfortunate reply - I think you'll find that every major piece of tech will have embargo because reviewers traditionally get a piece of tech for a week to get sufficient time with it for their review. It's especially important for Youtuvers who have to write, film, and edit their review.

Just think about it for a minute as you'll see that every major review site gets the same treatment - Marques mentions in most of his Apple reviews that he's had xyz device for a week before launching into his considered review.

I would assume that, like in the film industry, if a piece of tech is a turkey and the manufacturer knows it they won't put review units out at all...

Preorders are a small piece of Apple's sales and tend to come from their most loyal customers who would be buying irrespective of reviews which is I'm sure why Apple is OK with having a long gap between preorder and review embargo lift. The majority of customers who will be buying over the next year will have reviews to look at. Even if Apple didn't want any they can't stop them once the device is on sale and anyone could buy them anyway.

I am still convinced the delays here are all a combination of COVID induced shortages and a desire to keep the review stream aligned with WWDC. That allows the first wave of reviews to be the standard "unboxing" and "first impressions" and then the second wave that usually comes a couple of weeks later to go "deep" will be able to interweave whatever happens at WWDC without being "stale".

If the 2021 IPP is a dud it will come out quickly no matter what Apple would do to try and stop it.

Also, they have a 14 day return policy so anyone who gets their device can return it no questions asked very quickly and there will absolutely be reviews posted within that 14 day window.

We are 2 years away from a 3nm chip. The m1 is a 5nm chip so the upgrade in speed from m1 to “m2” is going to be negligible. Kind of like the 2020 iPad Pro over the 2018 iPad Pro. Next year we will see a slightly faster m1x or m2 and micro led across both 12” and 11”. I think apple will stick with micro led for iPads while using Oled for phones simply because screen burn in would be more noticeable on a larger screen like iPad.

I’m not entirely sure about that. Apple is likely to move to ArmV9 for M2 which will bring at least 15% improvements on it‘s own. I’d expect the move to M2 to give a larger than expected increase than following years.

Review embargoes are standard practice for lots of industries. Tech, movies, games, cars, etc. It does not “mean” anything. Reviewers with a lot of followers get units early to try (and sometimes keep) along with a contract with terms including when the embargo ends. That way they’re more on a level playing field and not rushing to be the first.

I agree that pre-orders are mostly fanboys, still, that first month of sales is massively important, and if the reviewers just got their models, and are fresh with excitement, the first reviews - the ones that will be seen most through the life of the product - will be THOSE reviews. So, if you’re a little worried about the “One Month In And I’m Regretting It” videos, well... that same YouTuber made a video a month prior called, “The New iPad Pro is a Game Changer”. Just make sure THAT video is co-ordinated with Opening Day. Now, it’s true that rule may apply regardless, but it becomes a must with a “great, but not much better” product that you need to launch big, because it’ll taper.

Edit: Granted, I may be poisoned by the fact that I’ve been in movie marketing for 20 years. And one of the sayings is, “If a movie doesn’t have any reviews before opening day... THAT’S the review.”

Since he went indie on his channel, things have gone downhill. He seems to want to be in the iJustine category of 6m subscribers, but she is more an entertainment channel who talks tech.

I prefer smaller reviewers like Gary, The Everyday Dad and Tech Gear Talk who get into using the devices for the intended purpose and tell you about the experience.

They are also more honest in terms of 'you don't need the Pro for your use case, you will be fine with the £329 base model'.

I like Justine for the entertainment mostly. Her videos are fun to watch to pass time while eating. I recently found Tech Gear Talk and like his videos. He goes really in depth and really tries to explain to the normal consumer the pros and cons of devices. I liked Everyday Dad but he's too bias for me now.

Don’t mind at all.

It’s how I found apps like GoodNotes which I rely on heavily, it’s how I found out some uses for the LiDAR Scanner. It’s how I learn about iPadOS features on new updates that may not had gotten attention in the keynotes.

It’s not specific youtubers, just searches.

Agreed, say what you want about iJustine, shes more pleasing to look at and better to listen to (doesnt sounds like shes reading from a teleprompter like Rene, where his jokes that may work on paper just DONT translate well to the spoken word).

Gary is pretty decent.
