i need (to be more accurate, I must...) to replace my 27’ mid 2010 i3 iMac. I thought that Apple will introduce the new models yesterday, but no iMac for me today =[

iMacs over the last few years have been released in either June or October. The last update was June 2017, so I've expect an announcement next month. Not too long to wait........

......(unlike the Mac Mini)

I understood that the new models will have much improved screen, so I’ll wait a little bit more... =]

One of the folks that writes about Apple (don't recall the name but, as rumor mongers go, seems fairly reputable) offered vague rumors about an improved display. But who knows what that means? I've seen quite a bit of speculation that it would include Apple's True Tone technology that seeks to balance white balance for ambient light. Aside from almost certainly using a newer generation of cpus the specs and availability of new iMacs is pretty much a black hole.

Its the 8th-gen processors (which should mean 6 core options) that might be worth waiting for.

The "new screens" are just a vague rumor that could mean anything - but the new CPUs would be almost obligatory (i.e. if they don't appear in the next few months its time to start pricing up PCs).

An October Mac event seems probable - but there's no guarantee as yet.

The new models will also probably have new GPUs... which aren't ready yet. We'll likely see a new Macbook/Air and Mini this October but I'd be surprised if new iMacs appeared before November. The might not even arrive until early 2019.

If you need a new iMac and are upgrading from an old dual-core i3 go ahead and get a 2017 quad-core model.

There are "new" GPUs ready, 580X, 570X etc., but Apple most likely wants to avoid having a new 6 core iMac competing with their entry level iMac Pro. I doubt there'll be a new iMac model until 2019.

If you really need one now, the 2017 is still a fantastic machine!
I recently bought one, and wouldn't regret it if they bring a new one out in October, because it can do everything I need without any issues and will continue to do so for years to come. I can edit 4k videos, multi-layer photos, edit music (if I wanted, but generally I don't) as well as within bootcamp run any game I'm likely to want to play.
I can run GTA5 on my 2017 iMac and it genuinely looks better than playing the same game on my Xbox One with the 5k screen and settings aren't on low either. No lag, even when online it's smooth and responsive. It's a great machine! :)

A 6-core wouldn’t compete with the baseline 8-core iMac Pro. Aside from 2 additional cores, The iMP will still have better GPU’s, ECC memory, server-grade processors, SD slot, faster SSD, more IO ports and up to 128 GB of Ram and 10gb Ethernet. Plus it’s marketed towards the pro community.

The 6-core iMac would be the top-level BTO option, and would fill in the current gap between the current top level iMac and baseline iMP.

Sorry, that's is pretty frustrating, I know. I am disappointed, I was hoping for a surprise announcement, but nothing unfortunately. The choices are to buy the current model iMac or wait and see if they update it next month. I am tired of waiting, so today I ordered an iMac. I'd rather get to work on a great, fast machine than worry if I have the latest and greatest. The sooner you by, the sooner you can upgrade in two or three years to a truly updated machine!

Assuming they do release a new version in October, what do people think they will use for a graphics card?

Realistically just the AMD 500x series. The main upgrade will be a cpu bump, with rumors of a display upgrade - I’m guessing could be HDR support. They could surprise us with an updated cooling system to support the 95W chips and add 10gb Ethernet too.

Why would it not be the 9th gen that Intel is rumored to announce in early October?

Well that depends whether those rumors are true and, even if they are, when the chips are actually available in quantity.

Also, based on a quick google, the only 9th-gen chips rumoured to launch in October are the top-end 'K'-series 95W variants which would only go in the top-end iMac 5k models - the 65W chips suitable for the 4k or the lower-end 5k models will be another few months.

If Apple are going to skip the 8th gen and go straight to 9th gen processors (which makes a certain amount of sense) they might wait until the full range are available next year - there's no firm evidence of an iMac refresh next month.

In some ways, I think the 6-core, 65W i5 might be the sweet spot for the iMac, especially if they want to re-design the case - the current 95W i7 certainly cranks up the fans when you max it out. Apple might also see an 8-core iMac as a threat to iMac Pro sales.

Obviously Nvidia RTX 2000 series. Why would Apple stick their customers with anything but the best graphics card when paying thousands of dollars for a premium desktop computer. :)

Install an SSD and you won't need to replace your 2010 iMac.

Valid point. I wonder if there will be a mixture of 8th and 9th gen, with the 9th gen being BTO options with heavy delay in shipping dates. I would be willing to wait.

Do they use the same chipset?

If yes a possible 27” lineup would be this:

Base: 3.1GHz i5-8600 (6 core/6 thread)

Mid: 3.7 GHz i5-9600K (6 core/6 thread)

Top: 3.6 GHz i7-9700K (8 core/8 thread)

BTO: 3.5 GHz i9-9900K (8 core/16 thread)

All starting with (hopefully) 16 GB ram and 256 GB SSD.
