I think im going to buy it from the Apple store here in NY. i dont want to deal with shipping it from amazon or something and take chances, these things are really fragile.

You're gonna buy it from the AppStore. I doubt that it even will be in stores.

Since I would likely customize it to the highest end video card and CPU i'll have to order it.

Having last week carried our ailing 20" iMac G5 into the Genius Bar at the Cambridge (UK) Apple Store, I don't fancy carrying a 27" iMac! :(

So I expect we'll get our next iMac mail ordered from Apple via phone or web. Also that way, if it needs repair under warrantee, we won't have to return it to the Apple Store because they'll collect it. That's what happened last summer when our then new MacBook Pro wouldn't wake when we opened it. A replacement was delivered and the faulty one was collected.:D

theres a good reason not trust shipping companies, most of the time they are okay but when my lcd was delivered i saw how the delivery guy carelessly slammed it on the floor from the truck and what not.. i screamed on him to effin be careful.. i cant imagine how they toss a heavy imac..

I have always wondered how many iMac problems was caused by the harsh treatment of the delivery carriers. In my past 40 years buying electronic items for my personnal use at my home, I have used USPS, FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc. I have only had to return one package (shortwave radio) that was delivered by USPS which I refused delivery (big whole in package and some rattling noise when I shook it).

Where I use to work (fed government site) dozens of deliveries every day by the big name carriers I would see every day how they would actually toss the individual large packages on the loading docks from the back of the trucks. Many packages which contained electronics. Which is why I will buy my new iMac from the Apple Store which is only 5 miles from my home. When Apple Store gets there items they are delivered in large quantities on a wooden plat and completely wrapped in plastic. Forklift is used to unload from truck to store delivery area. This way less chances of badly handle merchandise and also the Apple people checks this delivery very carefully to make sure there is no physical outside damage to the cartons before they except the delivery.

Here's a thought, how are the iMacs delivered to the stores? the same kinda couriers that deliver to your house?
Does the store always open and inspect the iMac before you carry it away? when ever I visit my local store in Bath (UK) I often see a new proud owner of an iMac being shown how it works etc, but not sure if they do this to everyone or just those who ask...
If not could it mean that you've just carried it all the way home to find it doesn't work?
Sorry guys just got me thinking here

Ditto, me to, use to be a, what we call in the UK a "White Van Man" delivering parcels and such, most were careful, but some were real brutal in the way they handled deliveries.

For all you "I dont trust shippers" Macginger got this right.

How the hell do you think the iMacs get to the stupid store? In the back of a delivery truck, duh. Worst logic ever.

Mine is coming from whoever has it cheapest.

Badger^2, read uspp144's post in this thread, he explained how they deliver to the store, its different than how ups or usps delivered to your home.

The difference between buying it from a store and shipping is that if i get it from the store and there's a problem i can take it back the same day instead of waiting for a week.

thats also true. i mean listen guys, i bought 2 of my lcds from amazon so im not a shipping denier or anything lol , i just think that an imac is reallly fragile as in if they throw it in the shipping process it will be more likely to fail then say an LCD or a laptop so i think ill rather buy from the apple store to be sure.

Besides , i think the apple store will be the first to have them anyways.

One question to u guys. do u think the new iMac will be sold out or the iMacs are not like the ipads and ipods and iphones?

Im guessing the iMacs dont sell out like the iTouch devices ..

I'll be customizing mye 27" iMac Quad-Core so i'll have to order it from Apple.com Store. I only wish I could have it shipped to the store so they could transfer my data from my Dell Dimension E510. But since that is not an option home delivery. I was skeptical when reading others concerns about harsh transport. But again it is true it is the same as getting to the store.

they get shipped to the store, getting it shipped to you is a second time it gets shipped so theres a higher risk for it to get damaged as it gets shipped twice.

listen, it will probably be all the same but all i said is that for myself, i dont want to take any chances with this 27 inch imac
