Don't think for a moment that Photos is remotely a replacement for Aperture. The two main candidates to replace Aperture are Lightroom and Capture One Pro.

After buying Aperture full price just before it was discontinued, I switched to Lightroom. It lacks some features I want from iPhoto, and so I still use both on an older OS version. With iPhoto 8 you can export all the information, including comments and geotags, using the Phoshare (free 3rd party) application and get the benefits of both tools (with some substantial extra hassle).

Lots wrong with Apple now days, but there is a maps view and you can add the location to pictures. If you have Location under the View menu, "View>Metadata> Location" checked it will import the location if it is in the photo. That may not be on by Default. To add a location it a photo or group of photos it is pretty much like it was in iPhoto. Select the photos and do a Get Info and you will see a place to add the location. The map is much different than it was before, there is no button for it. To see the large map click on Photos at the top of the side bar, if you aren't using the side bar choose Photos at the top of the window. Which ever way you select Photos the back arrows will take you back to Moments or Years. Click on the date or Year, not a photo and you will see the big map open. It isn't cluttered with every photo you have, but the photos of only that Moment or Year.

Thanks - I've had a go and I think the situation is now that you can't, for example, see all the shots in London or New York. If you've trying to find a picture by location, it doesn't seem to work. Well, it doesn't seem to have been deemed worthy of inclusion. I just find it all too depressing :(

The location will be imported whether that is ticked or not. Ticking that option puts a little white push pin icon in the bottom left corner of a thumbnail to show that that photo includes location info.
