I know, right? Why the major news outlets actually cover stories they are unwilling to post as front page/major stories only to have the likes of Drudge Report simply regurgitate is beyond me. However as a Libertarian I am relieved, and quite thankful, that somebody is willing to put these stories at the forefront so all of us can bask in the rays of enlightenment.
:D

Yup..

Read headlines everywhere. Skim the content for motives and cynicism. Note the source.

"News" is what's left by ignoring the fiends lying to you. There is no good source in the mainstream or alternative media, so go with your best guess about things.

Broadly:

  1. I get analysis, opinion and financial news from the FT. For this I pay around £20 per month.
  2. I read The Economist for unbiased summaries of the week's news, and its special reports and technology quarterlies. I think this is around £30 per quarter... can't remember.
  3. I flick through the Guardian for columns (David Mitchell, Charlie Brooker…), scoops and general news. For free.
  4. I'll happily flick through the Daily Mail in my lunch break for mind-numbing LOLs. For free.
  5. Twitter, twitter and twitter for everything else.
  6. The BBC to substantiate the crazy things I read on Twitter. Pay license fee.

I'll read or watch pretty much any news outlet that Rupert Murdoch doesn't have his filthy hands in.

I buy The Times occasionally and hate myself for doing so.

The Guardian is a good website for world news. I think they have a US version and their iOS app is pretty good. It's left leaning though, so not to everyone's taste.

Having lived abroad, I realise how lucky we are to have the BBC. Their radio news is best though - Radio 4 and World Service particularly - and they do some good podcasts like From Our Own Correspondent - which is a current affairs show with a travel slant (news stories from the wide network of foreign correspondents they have posted around the world).

I avoid Fox/Sky at all costs.

How could I forget Radio 4? Today, More or Less, The Bottom Line, PM, Money Box, Any Questions... fantastic radio. Though, shame about the Archers, Woman's Hour...

Indeed - never a fan of Archers but Woman's Hour actually does have some good stuff on it. Their radio comedy is also (probably) the best in the world .. I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, Just a Minute, News Quiz, The Unbelievable Truth and of course (in the distant past) the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

The Unbelievable Truth is top quality. Incase you're interested, Evan Davis tweeted this the other day. Quality!

My homepage is Yahoo!, so I'll usually read the headlines on there.

We constantly have either Fox News or CNN (or both) on at work, and I'll get a glimpse of the banner headlines every now and then.

I often hear a lot of local and some national news on the AM talk radio station I listen to on the drive to/from work.

I like to think I have a pretty wide variety. :)

Over the last few years, the Fox news shows have run away with the highest ratings, and continue to do so. MSNBC and CNN have lagged far behind. Those are just the facts. I generally prefer Fox news, Drudge, and the Wall Street Journal for my news. We listen to NPR in the morning because my wife likes it. However, I find their stories to be about 1-2 days behind of online sources, and many times they omit key elements of stories that other sources reported, which give me the appearance of a bias. For example, they interview one person on one side of an issue, but not a person on the other side. Why? NPR is fine for cooking shows and CarTalk, but not for news for me anymore.

What's scary is that comedy shows like the Daily Show and Colbert have steadily climbed in the ratings, and now place better than some MSNBC or CNN news shows. I can't believe that so many people get information from comedy shows like the Daily Show and Colbert. I guess we really are living in the era of the low-information voter.

This is a surprisingly good news source. I love the complete lack of American bias

So you prefer mid-eastern bias?

We are!

Believe it or not people get their "news" from Drudge, Fox, and the WSJ then vote, it’s scandalous, we as a nation should be ashamed.

Ratings are no indication of quality.

Just because The Daily Show and Colbert Report have good ratings doesn't mean people don't get their information elsewhere too.

As for low information voters, I agree.

Study finds Fox News viewers more misinformed than non-news watchers

A recent university study confirms what many have suspected; people who watch Fox News are less informed than people who don't watch the news at all.

The University of Maryland conducted the poll. Among the results it was found that Fox News viewers were 30% more likely to believe that "most scientists do not agree that climate change is occurring." Further embarrassment was found when Fox viewers were 14% more likely to believe that "the stimulus bill did not provide any tax cuts." The stimulus bill included one of the largest tax cuts ever for middle class Americans.

The study's findings were first mentioned by usnews.com, who reported that a stunning 31% of Fox viewers honestly believe that "it is not clear that Obama was born in the United States."

Those who claim non-partisanship of the poll might be interested to learn that there was no difference in terms of Republicans who watched Fox, and Democrats who watched Fox. Both groups of people were, surprisingly, equally as misinformed.

The Daily Show and Colbert Report are more factual than anything on Faux News.

You can still report the news with a comedic twist, which both of those shows do quite well.

I like to get my news from more places than just the US. You can filter through the middle eastern bias by pooling watching it with other stations. It makes me happy that as more news sources become available, we can learn so much more.

Good luck with Fox News. Honestly, better them than MSNBC. That is a place where ratings talk. No one watches MSNBC and their team of caricatures giving opinions.

Thank you for the considered reply. I agree with all of it.

And then there's this:

Science Says GOP Voters Better Informed and Open Minded

Pew’s data suggests that the Democrats’ low average rating likely is a consequence of its bipolar political coalition, which combines well-credentialed post-graduate progressives who score well in quizzes with a much larger number of poorly educated supporters, who score badly.

Here's where I get my news:

CNN
BBC News
Fox News (yeah, I know :p )
Wall Street Journal Marketwatch
Google News
Yahoo! News
Huffington Post (Left-leaning)
Townall.com (Right-leaning)
ESPN

TMZ :D

(oddly enough people like to talk about trashy, weird-o celebrity stuff...)

and CNN, NYTimes, Boston.com, WSJ.com for, you know, 'news'.

I stopped paying attention to any mainstream US news outlets. It's all just propaganda.

I read Zerohedge, The Economist, FAZ and Die Welt. On occasion, I peruse the WSJ, but I'm not as keen on the Journal anymore as I used to be.
