I have a Macbook air M1 8GB silver that I want to sell to upgrade for MBP16. Where would you suggest selling it instead of doing trade in with Apple?

I've had multiple good experiences with Mac of All Trades (macmeanoffer.com). Sellyourmac.com is also good. Years ago I would sell on eBay, but no more. Way too much of a hassle now with scammers and high fees.

Sold a base 2017 MacBook on eBay in March for $375+shipping, and my girl's 2017 base MBP in April for $400+shipping. Had no issues selling. We now have 2 base M1Airs that were $665 each open box.

Cashforyourmac.com which is the reselling/trade-in arm of Quality Macs, a long time brick and mortar Apple gear store. I've been selling my old hardware to them for years and have never had any hassles.

I use ebay. I prefer the auction format rather than trying to pick a price that I think it will move at. Especially when I'm selling old machines.

Finding a friend interested in buying it has always been my favorite, followed by SellYourMac (for older devices) and Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist (with a healthy dose of smarts) for newer devices.

I've not had any negative experiences with selling on eBay, just put that it's collection only and document all serial numbers etc before sale.

Problem with eBay, they take a chunk out of it (sale).
Yeah that is true... although if the buyer is collecting, you can always arrange direct payment outside of eBay with some people I guess.

It depends on what your goal is. If you're trying to get as much as possible in return, then I use Swappa. If I'm just trying to get it sold fast, I trade into Apple even though it's a LOT less, although Swappa can be pretty quick if you know how to do it correctly.

Isn't trading in with Apple risky? Lots of reports of their using a 3rd party, disreputable service that repeatedly downgrades the condition of the trade in and gives less money than quoted?

See any number of threads around MacRumors!

Yes and no. Phobio is their trade-in partner. I have done a mail-in trade-in with them and yes the criticisms are legit. I don't know if their practices have changed or if Apple made them do things differently but it has seemed to get better. Years ago I remember trying to trade in a MBP and they gave me a much lower quote when they received the device. I kept it and later sold it on Swappa for a much better price than Apple/Phobio.

This year when I traded in my Imac for the Studio (with Apple/Phobio) I was afraid the same thing was going to happen but it did not. They gave me the quoted price.

I know I've heard conflicting stories about whether Apple accepts in-store trade-ins for devices other than iPhones. When I've traded in iPhones at my local store - completely pleasant, fair, and quick process. I have never tried to trade in a Mac at an Apple store. If Apple lets you do that, I recommend it.

I had 2015 27" iMac which I decided to trade-in to Apple. too bulky of an item to deal with shipping and other means of selling. If I had a laptop, I would probably be more opent o different options.
