You'd have to be daft to buy it. The current one is a rip off, especially in the UK.

You can pick up 1440p Dells for ~£250. Very few laptops happily run video at 5K 30FPS, and even then, there's no 5K media to consume. 5K is improvement for the sake of improvement. It's gonna be another couple of years before 4K YouTube/films are commonplace - who needs 5K?

Apple are being really stupid not releasing something - in my case I've now gone to Samsung and got a 34inch screen - That is nearly 1000 pounds now sitting in Samsung's pocket instead of Apples !

Just release something !

The point of 5K is that you can display in Retina/HiDPI mode (@2x) and get the same resolution (size) as a standard 27" monitor.

5120x2880 becomes 2560x1400 in Retina mode.
A 4K 3840x2160 display that is run in 2x Retina mode will look like 1920x1080 which is not optimal for 27".

There is fortunately a middle ground, you can run the 4K display in @1.5x Retina mode and it will be 2560x1400 and look slightly crisper. But you can understand that Apple won't settle for that when the only real holdup here is DP 1.3.

The answer very simple: most people buy dlsplays to just connect computers, right? And why sell to people only display while you can sell all in one computer with wonderful display as a iMac? For gigantic vendor like Apple inc the price difference between is nothing.

I love apple products, their ecosystem has consumed me, but... Apple doesn't release what we want. They tell us what we want. I won't hold my breath for such a monitor...

Apple won't release the first Macs with Intel's new Skylake chips and Thunderbolt 3 support until later in 2016, and only those models will be able to drive a 5K display at 60Hz over one cable. While that makes a 5K Thunderbolt Display a possibility in 2016, Apple has good reason to wait until at least 2017.

No, they haven't. Let's see.

Dell released the UP2715K 5K monitor back in septebre 2014. Apple support for up to 5120-by-2880 resolution at 60Hz on a single external display (15" rMBP with AMD Radeon R9 M370X). It's absolutely sure, that Dell will release soon a new 5k display with thunderbolt 3 support, and then you can connect with a single cabel. No way that apple would stay out ot this if all the conditions are already given.

The amazing thing is how Apple almost never lowers their prices. Is that Thunderbolt 1 monitor REALLY still worth $999??? I don't think so. But then this is Apple who is known for letting their "flagship" Mac Pro go for 2-4 years at a time with no update and not dropping the price one red cent and somehow expecting people to buy a 4 year old computer for $2500-$12000.

Apple may be many things, but they ARE often a rip-off. It's a shame since the OS is SO much nicer overall than Windows with a UNIX foundation and doesn't spy on you like Windows 10. Too bad it has to be attached to overpriced hardware with poor graphic driver maintenance support. :(

I feel like at this point apple should have some loss leaders in there. or is it lost leaders, anyway sell stuff that makes no money.

Having a 4k display in any form should be in there, even if it makes no money and is a burden. Apple should offer the best tech they can and 4k seems like it's totally okay to offer now. It makes sense to offer something rather than just letting your customers shop elsewhere. Apple should be end to end for everything that is needed or wanted in their ecosystem. It is a bit of an oversight to just not update it because it's a burden to the company it's not like they are making too many product lines or anything.

Maybe some of you can chime in and give some advice on a second monitor. I'm running a late 2013 27" iMac with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB video card.

I don't need 4K. There are some options on craigslist and I can either:

1) pick up a 30" cinema display for $85
2) get a used Thunderbolt display for $600
3) buy a non-Apple display

The first two options come from a marketing company and he is giving a 60 day warranty on them. If you were in my shoes what would you do?

Too expensive to fix monitors out of warranty. I would buy a non-Apple display.

The display also needs a computer, you know.

5K Thunderbolt Display + MacBook Pro >> 5K iMac

Yes you do.
But consider the large installed base of existing MacBook Pro owners. With no standalone display to connect to,
their only Apple branded solution is an iMac.

No doubt there will be one at some point. But it's probably not hurting Apple's bottom line, otherwise it would be a priority.

Nice article. I like Apple displays but $999 for a 5 year old model is ridiculous. I'm ready to go drop $600 for an LG 3440 x 1440 34" display with USB 3.0.

Like a previous commenter, I also and waiting for the 2016 MBP.

The smallest screen I use is 37", and that is only because it cost $1500 around 12 years ago. I am looking to buy a 4K, 55"-65" screen that can be my computer monitor and TV.

I couldn't wait anymore, for the price of one of these old monitors I bought two Dell 27" 4k monitors.

I got an ASUS 4K monitor and it's okay but I would rather have an Apple display that doesn't have sleep issues because Apple coordinates OSX with the monitor. Pipe dreams.

Nice, I also have a 34" LG (curved) 3440x1440 with TB2 and USB 3.0. :)

I only showed him the other one because he wrote 4K and the 34" are just UHD.

We are not talking standalone displays, we are talking 5K displays. The current Apple Thunderbolt Display is good enough for existing MacBook Pro's and vice versa. For a new Apple 5K Thunderbolt Display we need new Macs with Thunderbolt 3. For the iMac Apple could build it's own custom timing controller, but for a separate display it needs a standardized connector.
