What Mac are you running those Dells off? a new Mac Pro

Personally I would have probably brought a Dell over an Apple display as I generally prefer matte over glossy glass.

A year or so ago I was in an Apple Store and they had a 4K Matte display (Panasonic ?) attracted to a new Mac Pro next to a Mac mini with an Apple Display, the non Apple display looked far better in my opinion.

I'm actually running them both off a 13" retina MacBook Pro. It can run them both full Rez and the internal display as well. Works great.

It's not coming because Apple likes fragmenting its hardware ecosystem and wants it's high end customers to buy goldish watches and go to hell.

Believe it or not, not everyone buys a display to solely consume media.
There are plenty of companies out there that have done, will do, and always will do monitors better than Apple. Better panels, lower prices. Buying the TB monitor is simply the manifestation of the desire to have shiny Apple products over your desk.

This is a prime example of what's wrong with the direction of Apple (stale and nearly abandoned products). They like to bite off more than they can chew in many areas. Apple would be better off discontinuing products that haven't seen an update for years and don't fall into special timeless product catagories. With the amount of resources available to Apple, it's amazing how little they update products. Apple needs to slim down and shed certain product catagories if they want to be successful in the long run. They should really get back to their core competencies. Apple has a proven track record of failure in web services and success in hardware.

I can't believe they're still charging $999 for that woefully outdated display.

Nearly six years old, USB 2.0 and first gen t-bolt.

Totally unsat.

Well, they still sell an un-updated 2012 13" MBP.

Although to be fair, I'd buy that over any of their current machines (since I need the internal storage flexibility).

The Thunderbolt Display is an absolute disaster. Terrible quality control, terrible life span, horrendously out-of-date, ridiculously over-priced.

I have seen so many thunderbolt displays crap out a year or two into their life. I honestly cannot believe that Apple even sells them any longer.

It's dated, but it's not a terrible monitor. Buy a used one. It's great, the backlight is bright and is accurate enough to work between Apple machines with the same monitors.

The Dell's that people keep propping up are the crappy monitors in this equation.

Which makes differentiating between TB as a specification and TB as a controller difficult. Whatever Intel implements in its Thunderbolt controllers is de facto the TB specification.

Yes because Intel owns it, like I said. No one else makes TB controllers. This is the reason why it's not as mainstream as USB 3.0 and up and coming USB-C. It's probably because TB is so tightly connected to the PCIe bridge that Intel has to control it.

If I understand TB correctly, yes, this means we have to wait for Intel to implement DP 1.3 support in the TB controller chip. It don't believe you can simply feed a DP 1.3 signal (say from an AMD or Nvidia GPU, both of which are expected to incorporate DP 1.3 this year) into the controller and have a DP 1.3 signal multiplexed in the TB output. Even if a new nMP is released this year with current cards that support 1.3 (ha ha ha), TB 3 will hamstring them—underscoring the inanity of the TB standard's tethering of video and data signals.

And the inanity of having a Mac Pro without swappable cards or, well, anything.
[doublepost=1453029925][/doublepost]
And that 1GB holds up better than Android phones with 3GB RAM.

Umm, NO. Enough with this "1GB is enough" BS.

Can we please not go there?

Worst idea and possibly post I've ever read. Logic Pro is the BEST DAW on the market and you think they should ditch it? I'm thinking of putting you on my ignore list (you'd be the only one so far in a decade).

As if this THAT wasn't bad enough....

OK, let's discontinue my computer too. o_O

Screw iOS. It may have made Apple more money than anything else, but it's also the worst thing that ever happened to Apple COMPUTER (as in they don't give a crap about their core product anymore, the Mac and spend almost all their time on those crappy smart phones. The smart phone is the single worst technological device ever invented after the Atomic Bomb. It has caused more social damage and introversion than anything in history including Autism.

Hey, why not ditch OS X while you're at it and you'll then have a clean sweep of ANY reason for me to own ANY Apple product what-so-ever :p

(I already ditched AppleTV for Android based FireTV with Kodi and converted my 1st Gen units into a Linux Kodi box via Broadcom upgrade).

iMacs SUCK also dude. Give me back the PowerMac. Now THAT was a nice computer for its day.

Apple is a company not a charity. They don't owe anyone anything, however I think the loyal users for 10-15+ years should kind of be respected.

I agree the iMac is a buggy piece of poo with poo Gpus. I get consistent crashes on my 2014 rMBP because of the nvidia gpu (there's a thread on the official forum for this).

The quality just isn't the same anymore.

As a photographer and video producer, my preferred set up would be a new Macbook Pro, to allow for mobility, with an external 5K screen from NEC, for its colour gamut. The laptop would have most of the GUI but the 5K screen would be for editing 4K video at 100% scale with some playback controllers. If the Skylake chips limit this scenario it would be a shame as I am looking to upgrade this year. Perhaps a 4K NEC screen in what I hope would be Single Stream Transport SST mode. Is this a viable solution in 2016 with the next Skylake processors, can anyone advise. I would not be happy with MST as I have read about some serious display and performance issues.

Spot on. Logic is great, not arguing that. My point is Apple doesn't refresh products often enough, they need to focus on their largest money makers. Do away with the stale product lines. They have been late to the market so many times recently. Apple Watch, Apple Music, Apple Radio, etc. Almost everything they create is turning mediocre. Apple Display is a prime example. If you can't give a product the attention it deserves, don't sell the product at all. It's like they put a bunch of products on the back burner and forgot they exist. Apple Car will be such a priority that attention to other products will only get worse. Ever since iPhone was launched, Mac has been receiving less and less attention. Apple should stop pretending all their products are in great shape, discontinue the products that they love to ignore.

doesn't explain the fact that Mac Pro needs a monitor that's new. mac pro is not discontinued.
Ok, let me explain te sad reality... Apple went to the grave with Steve Jobs. Jobs was the person who had a blast creating things for others. Tim Cook is a puppet, he is not even the highest paid person in the payroll, he is like Obama... the manager of the franchise but not the owner.

Apple has been take over by people just to make a profit, sell products, no innovation, they do not care about innovation. They just care about making the most money at the lowest cost. A monitor is not even relevant on a board of directors, "people can get a get a better one somewhere else and cheaper than the one we would make". That is Apple now.

Yes, they have their hands in many areas. I'd love to see them be a bit more focussed and attentive to details. But somehow I think they've maxed their resources on pet projects like the Apple Watch at the expense of other product lines.

However, for Apple to truly innovate, they do need to experiment. Gone are the days where they honed products and software to perfection. Today's design thinking is to get things out, prototype, iterate and refine. There's probably no right or wrong approach, just different. Unfortunately, being the most successful company in the world, makes them a target and every tiny misstep is magnified.

So wrong on so many levels. Yes, maybe after Steve's passing things are different, but Tim Cook was Steve's right hand man since he came back to Apple in 1997. Sure Tim doesn't have the eye that Steve does, but no one does.

Apple has teams of people, and Steve managed all of them because he knew enough about each persons job to get the best out of them. Obviously Tim doesn't have the same capacity.

Apple was never really an inventive company, they were just pragmatic and took chances. Steve saw things before anyone else, I think that was intuitive to him.

We don't know where Apple is headed, but at this stage they just want to streamline their product lines. Before iOS devices (circa 2007) Apple's primary money maker was the Mac (incl. Monitors) and iPods (incl. iTunes). Things have changed, Apple owns (in an important manner) the mobile market. The displays and even a lot of Macs are not their primary concern anymore.

Remember, Apple owns maybe 8% of the marketshare for their personal computers, and now they own a major part of the market in mobile devices. So the resources on that 8% marketshare are less because it's not their moneymaker, however, I don't think they "don't care", but rather they just don't have enough resources.

Honestly the GPU performances in rMBPs and iMacs are horrible but oh well.

I'm gonna have to go the opposite way on this.

I'm really glad Apple didn't release a "bumped-up" version of the current display. Because I would have bought it. And then I'd be buying another display in only 2 or so years because what I really want is the 5K Thunderbolt 3/USB-C unified port version that will come.

USB 3.0 is on the way out now probably, to be replaced by USB-C.

And I swear, if they did release that display and then the proper 5K TB3/USB-C one only a couple/few years later, all of you would be like "planned obsolescence, Apple screwed me on mah $1,000 purchase," etc.

Of course; the TB monitor is obscenely overpriced (not to mention outdated). 5K (or upwards) monitors can hardly be deemed useless because YouTube only goes up to 4K... o_O

Question: The author says: "But no current Macs could drive such a 5K display over a single cable."

The current MacBook Pro 15" (Late 2015) spec says:

Thunderbolt digital video output
  • Native Mini DisplayPort output
  • DVI, VGA, dual-link DVI, and HDMI output supported using Mini DisplayPort adapters (sold separately)
  • Support for up to 5120-by-2880 resolution at 60Hz on a single external display (model with AMD Radeon R9 M370X only)
So, while it looks like the MacBook Pro could drive it, on closer examination, it seems to work only with two TB ports. At least, that's what this Apple Document says.
It's time that Apple comes up with a new Thunderbolt 3 Display in 5K, USB 3.1, etc. and New MacBooks to support it over a single cable.

I finally want to replace my old 27" @ 2.560 × 1.440 Apple Thunderbolt Display (TBD) with a 27" @ 5.120 × 2.880 Thunderbolt 3 Display. It's simple: Once you have worked for a few hours on the Retina display of the MacBook Pro, it's a total pain to switch back the pixelated TBD. If Apple does not deliver a 5k Thunderbolt 3 Display with USB 3.1 and 1 GB Lan, I'll switch to the Dell UP2715K.

5k is useless on such a big monitor. It is the future, but I think useless for productivity.
