Great point. But having flash on iphone would cripple its already weak battery life. Flash can be pretty resource heavy.

Having MMS doesn't hurt Apple.
Having cut and paste doesn't hurt Apple.
Having, well, ANY of that stuff doesn't hurt Apple.

Letting flash on the iPhone would hurt Apple's app-store, and it would hurt the control they have over the iPhone and how it can be upgraded in the future.

They're not going to put themselves in that position.

Flash becoming "irrelevant"?? What is there to replace it....MS' silver light? :p :D Sorry mario, but that ain't happenin' ;) Flash will be around for a while...

Prob. a lot of truth to that. Still, step 1 is adobe building a non suck tailpipe version of flash for the iphone.

Once they do that (maybe not till the ARM assisted version) they we can say for sure it is apple blocking. Hopefully by then, flash will become more irrelevant (save for games sites etc.) and hopeully more and more devs will stop using it for sites.

A plumber can dream can't he?
:D

Flash is fairly useless, mostly used for animated ads that sap battery life.

Personally, I rarely if ever see Flash ads. Where do you people surf to?

Flash could be a universal method of putting apps on devices. Adobe is working with ARM cpu makers to be as efficient as possible, and use coprocessors as much as they can.

As for battery sucking, so does all the gratuitous sfx on the iPhone UI. There's no need to waste power copying data just to have sliding windows or fades. But it looks cool. :)

After reading everyone's responses... Flash is required to login to my financial institution's website. I have NO IDEA why they are using flash as the object that is used to enter your credentials, but nonetheless, they do.

Given that... it severly limits my ability to use the internet on my iphone. I am a subscriber to a few financial websites that use flash as the method to show their educational and informational videos. Again, I am unable to use my iphone to view these.

I spend more time away from my computer than I actually spend at my computer, so I depend greatly on my iphone to keep me involved with things.

Maybe someone can explain what the limitations are in displaying flash embedded websites on my iPhone? I can watch movies, play games, view youtube.... so why would Flash be a performance issue?

Also, I HAVE read reports that flash is now coming to the iPhone http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Flash+is+coming+to+the+iPhone&aq=f&oq=

So what's the deal? Why doesn't apple just force flash embedded apps to open in its independent program space? You go to a webpage that has flash video... you touch the object space on the web page, and an app starts on your iphone that displays the video, or the 'popup' login required, then closes and moves on. Apple would keep control, and STILL make everyone happy.

So what is exactly is the 'truth' that keeps flash available on the iphone?

The truth is this:

Apple hates Flash, why? Because flash should not be on the internet it is 2009. Its propriatery and just segregates the internet.

Apple is trying to make people move away from Flash to code which is standard. HTML 5 and the new CSS in Mobile Safari allows for 3d manipulation and such things.

HTML 5 supports the <video> </video> <audio> </audio> tags to embed video and audio without having to use flash.

Apple is in fact attempting to do the world ( and most likely itself ) a big favor and just get rid of Flash.

Google HTML5 and the new CSS that (only) Mobile Safari supports to see what it is able to do, it is very interesting.

Btw if you have Safari 4 Beta and you go to http://www.apple.com/safari/welcome/ you will see what these technologies can do without flash.

Bottom line is this: Apple is doing a really really good thing for the internet and its going to "hurt" the consumer in the process but ultimately our internet experience in the future will be much better because of this.

Thanks for reading if you did!
