The iPad 2 probably doesn't have the earsmart technology found in the iPhone 4S (and most likely the new iPad) which is required for the level of experience Apple wants you to have using the feature.

I don't recall Apple ever advertising that the iPad 2 would ever have built in dictation in any of it's promotional material. I don't see where they confused anyone or ripped anyone off. They did announce a brand new iPad model that is capable of the feature you request.

That's like getting pissed off if you had bought a 2012 Mustang without heated seats, then Ford makes a 2013 model that comes with heated seats standard. Would it be ok for you to march into a dealership and demanding they add it to your car for free.

No it seems most people replying to this thread are completely clueless.

Comparing having heated seats or not to having a software feature or not is moronic. Apple could quite easily let us use these extra features in their iOS updates, but they block them simply to get more sales. Every update Android users get are completely free, regardless of when you bought the phone.

Yes I agree in some respects. I bought the device with the features I was promised, why should I feel entitled to extra features? Well we get iOS updates, bug fixes, sometimes new features. Why not Siri? Yeah you can argue that the mic makes it less fluent, but I have seen Siri running on an iPhone 4 and it was fine.

If Apple said we couldn't have these features for a genuine reason, like it required a certain piece of hardware (like heated seats in a mustang...), then fair enough. But instead Apple like the BS their old customers and say the mic is capable etc..

Anyway, rant over. I was gonna buy the new iPad but I'm gonna wait till the next one. Yeah the retina display looks nice but that seems to be the only hardware feature worth getting.

You don't think there is any expectation of receiving software updates?

Hell they could sell the update, but forcing an entire new hardware to receive something your hardware is capable of isn't the slightest bit off to you?

And again, then would you have no issue with them charging for iOS major upgrades like they used to years ago? It just seemed like we had moved past that stage and thus created an expectation you consider when purchasing.

You forget that Apple FAR exceeds every competitor in offering great software updates for old devices. They are setting the bar in this and then some, even if they leave a few key new features out of updates for older devices.

Try swapping your phone out for an Android, then hold your breath for the next update. Keep an oxygen tank nearby for after you pass out.

Certainly Apple saw voice dictation as a differentiating feature for the new iPad. So they left it off the iPad 2. This is an industry norm.

The iPad 2 could do voice dictation (in fact the free Dragon Dictation app does it pretty well). But the new iPad has better hardware. See this article for all the gory details (it's about the iPhone 4S, but I'm sure the tech has carried over).

Well if you kept reading the thread, my next post kind of directly addresses this. Its the policy of supply all software updates for free for years prior that created the expectation that they wouldn't be holding back software features for the iPad 2 when people purchased it.

Android has issues with how segmented it is, but there are plenty of consumer devices that do provide Apples level of updates. I mentioned the 360 and ps3, handhelds have been giving major updates as well. Honestly I can't think of a > $100 device I own that doesn't receive such updates if applicable.

Of course Apple has still provided the core iOS updates so they are hardly abandoning it, its good support - but I dont see why its ridiculous to have had some expectation that we would eventually receive features like that if the hardware could handle it.

The logic that says a software only (again ignoring any hardware/server limitations for the sake of discussion) Siri SHOULD be held back would just as easily applied to iOS 5, and yet I know you all expected that and would be in an uproar were it held back.

Clueless is you not understanding marketing.

Apple will not miss your money!

I see your issue, you have confused Apple with a charity.

Every update Android users get are completely free, regardless of when you bought the phone.

That is untrue. I have several android tablets. I can't update them to later versions of the operating system.

I saw it running although not well. Either way, I am sure apple could make it run well, but what does it matter?
Siri is a feature of the iPhone 4s. It isn't a feature of the 4 and never was. Even if it can run, why should you automatically get it?

If Apple said we couldn't have these features for a genuine reason, like it required a certain piece of hardware (like heated seats in a mustang...), then fair enough. But instead Apple like the BS their old customers and say the mic is capable etc..

They could develop it more to work with the existing equipment, which costs a considerable amount of money. So they could spend that money to ensure you don't have a reason to buy what they are selling you

That is the point. Apple sell a thing. If you want that thing then you buy it (assuming you can afford it etc). If you don't want that thing, then you don't buy it. I don't quite understand the logic of complaining that the thing is not good enough for you to want to buy because the answer is really easy - just don't buy it. I didn't buy an iPad 2 as it wasn't enough of a change from the iPad one. I don't think the iPad 3 is enough of a change from an iPad 2, but it is from an iPad 1, which is what I have.

What I'd like is either for it to be added, or for Apple to provide a reasonable explanation to its users why it wasn't included in certain models. When Apple refused to put in Flash into their tablets, they gave us a nice explanation and the issue was settled. I don't understand why they don't do similar things regarding features left out.
